"Barron's learn Japanese the fast and fun way" seems to be a staple course book that major libraries have in their collection. I have borrowed it before but it was not until I bought a used copy from their book sales that I considered writing a review about it.Although described as a course book for learning Japanese, the content is actually an elaborate traveler's phrasebook with small explanations of Japanese grammar and quizzes. Just by checking the "contents" page and reading subsequent lessons, the Japanese presented limits to tourist phrases and vocabulary that the foreign tourist may want to, need to know for a short stay in Japan. Specifically, the language instruction follows the tourist adventure of the "smith" family in the most common tourist activities from arriving in Japan, sightseeing, shopping, and interacting with the natives.It dare say its debatable how useful in any other context, like say, a classroom course. "Learn Japanese" is presented exclusively in romanji (English approximations of Japanese pronunciation) and having been printed in 1999, this particular edition can be considered outdated. There is a section devoted to phrases to be used in a post office and the shopping section contains vocabulary related to "cassette tapes", "records", and "video discs" (which I suppose refers to laserdiscs or DVDs without having to pay royalties).Ultimately, I suppose "Learn Japanese" is so-so workbook for people preparing for a short visit to Japan. For anyone else, those taking a classroom course, tutoring with a native speaker, or using it in conjunction with other Japanese language courses, they will quickly find out the content falls well short of its "learn Japanese" claim because so much grammatical explanations are left out.
