This is an excellent dramatic reading of the original text of Romeo and Juliet. I used this in my high school literature class when we studied the play. It helped the students understand the play so much better. I also provided a parallel translation so they could follow along if they became confused. This was a rough class of at risk students and most of the students remained attentive. Adults would also greatly benefit from this audio version. Hearing the drama helps comprehension so much. The end of every scene is marked by the same audio sound so finding one's place is easy. There is also a table of contents for each of the discs so that you can determine which CD track you need to be on. Well worth the money.
My students read the play and listen to the audio at the same time. The sound effects bring the action to life, especially the "storm" at the Capulet tomb. This is a good idea for my rural kids who may not have the confidence to tackle reading the entire play aloud. Also, it gives more time for in class discussion. I use the DVD player and TV so I can pump up the volume as some of my students struggle with the accents of the actors. Overall, a great addition to teaching R&J.
I am a 9th grade English Teacher and I bought this to help with my lower learners in class. The positive side of it is the actors do a great job of carrying emotion in their voices which really brings out the meaning. However, being true to Shakespearean plays, the actors speak very quickly making it somewhat hard for my slower learners to follow. Also, there is a lot of added noises (birds chirping, wind blowing, etc.) which attempts to create a more realistic mood. I found that this just made it harder to listen to and distracted my kids.I wish there was a recording that was slower and with fewer added noises, but this is the best one I've found so far. Follows the script perfectly.
Thanks
