I found a battered copy of this book for sale at my library and it is one of the best books I have seen. I've been learning Japanese off-and-on starting with audio, then romaji, and finally kana. This book just pulls it all together.This book is Australian made. It is a very basic book since it teaches Hiragana throughout, but for a beginner, it is perfect. There are games to play to test yourselves, and even information about Japan. Your "tour guides" are a ninja, tanuki and kitsune that help you through the informational and game section. What I especially like is the "Dekimasu ka? (Can you do it?)" sections in each chapter that gives me a chance to see how much I have mastered.There is also a "Nani nani (What are they saying?)" page that is completely in Hiragana. It was fun once I remembered my characters deciphering what each word was. However, having seen them with the English throughout the chapters, I could recognize words and the end of the book. There is also a vocabulary section in the back.Mirai 1 is the perfect blend of romaji and hiragana. The audio section was a little hard to finD since I bought a used book, but for the most part, it is just the dialogue. There are a couple activities in each chapter that require the audio, but it is not really necessary. I used the text just fine without the audio. However, for a beginner, it is helpful to have a pronunciation template to listen to.I'll definitely be looking at Books 2 and 3!
