I have lived in VN for more than four years and have already made some progress in learning the language by using a variety of texts, most of which do not meet my expectations in the methodology they employ. Because so many of the texts focus on grammar and tone issues but few have good tapes, I decided to try the Pimsleur method. In the first ten lessons there are some things done very well. For example, they do not make the mistake that most texts do of introducing new vocabulary in lexical sets, which makes the new words 50-100% more difficult to remember; there is very good use made of repetition and the re-introduction of vocab learned in earlier sessions; there is ample opportunity for the learner/listener to repeat new phrases as they come up.I have two main criticisms. The first is the use of kinship terms which are used in VN to greet people. Which term to use depends on that person's age or status in relation to you. The discs suggest "anh" is used for a younger man. But this is incorrect if the man being addressed is younger than you are because "anh" means older brother or male relative. I am older than most of the Vietnamese I associate with and so I use the term "anh" rarely, usually as a term of respect when addressing my landlord, who is the same age as I am. In return he calls me "chi", (older sister) also as a term of respect. Most of the neighbours refer to him as "ong" (grandfather or older man). "Ong" is used for men older than "anh" and "anh" is used for someone who could be the age of your older brother. My landlady is younger than me; everyone else addresses her or refers to her as "ba" (grandmother or older woman) but she also calls me "chi" (older sister) and I call her "em" (younger sister).
