This is a terrific non-written way to learn Dutch. It contains 5 CDs. Each CD has 2 lessons. Each lesson is about 30 minutes. You complete the lesson as many times as you need before you can do it well, and move on. I think you should do each lesson at least twice. By the end you will be able to speak some Dutch rather well. You learn how to pronounce things correctly. The lessons are perfectly constructed. You know when you will be free for 30 minutes so you may plan to complete one. The audio features both male and female voices to help you understand better. You listen to conversations, then they explain what is being said, then you try to say certain words, and eventually phrases. The CD gives you time to respond when asked to say something. You are not supposed to pause the CD, just try to say the right thing. I like the way the system works. Since it is all audio and requires no book, you can do it while driving.Being audio only, you will not learn how to read or write in Dutch, but it is a great introduction and would compliment other learning sources well. This is not the full Pimsleur set (which costs a lot more) but for the price it is effective and better than many other systems. Conclusion: I recommend this because it is fun, easy, and effective. Many people buy a book and quit early on because it is so boring and you don't appear to be able to speak it well even after a lot of time and effort. After little time you will have fun successfully saying sentences in Dutch.
I purchased this set of CDs to prepare for a trip to Amsterdam. The instructor spoke slowly and cleary, and repeated words often enough to help them "stick." In one of the first lessons, you learn how to say "Do you speak English?" in Dutch. This is the most useful phrase you can learn as a traveler because in most Dutch-speaking countries, almost everyone speaks English. I barely got to practice my Dutch at all when I got to Amersterdam. Unless you need to master the Dutch language for some particular reason, these CDs are perfect for average traveler's needs.
After failed attempts with other lessons that promised "be where you want to be" yet required a workbook, or launched straight into conversations with your dentist, Pimsleur's Basic Dutch is a true, commuter-friendly beginner's Dutch on CD.The (well-priced) package contains 5 CDs, with 2 lessons per CD, lasting about 30 minutes each. The lessons build upon one another, increasing vocabulary, understanding of sentence structure, and confidence. The male and female characters converse with each other, and the listener, teaching syntax and cases through phrases you'd actually use during travels. You're also exposed to regional pronunciations, (my Dutch husband says the guy is from the south), so a heads-up on a bit of variance there.Pimsleur's approach is as fun as the language is challenging, and the lessons really work. You find yourself trying to beat the speaker to the Dutch translation, and laughing at the guy's insistence to have lunch at his house. It's the perfect way to make the most of a daily commute, and my Dutch in-laws are impressed with my rapid progress and accurate pronunciation, so I highly recommend this product.
Heading to Amsterdam in a few weeks, so we'll see how any of this really applies. I've been through all five of these CDs and I know every word of them inside and out--it's VERY easy to learn the language this way and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really like their approach of introducing new material while reviewing old material so you can feel like you're making progress. My main problem is I think there should be 2 or 3 more CDs in this "Basic" set. I know a few dozen Dutch phrases now, but very few of them will actually be useful, unless my trip suddenly takes a sleazy turn. Sample phrase: "Would you like to have something to drink with my at my place?" Come on. There are a few phrases that teach you how to ask directions, but there isn't much that a tourist can fall back on when it comes to navigating one's way around a store or market (no discussion of money) or ordering anything other than beer, wine or lunch--I still don't know the words for breakfast, dinner or water. Sure, I can jump up to the next set of CDs, but from what I've read, it's like moving from the kiddie pool to the cliffs of Acapulco. Wish there was a "Basic 2" or "Intermediate." Still, you have to start somewhere, and Pimsleur is the best I've found.
I've used this program in Japanese, Spanish, and now Dutch. For the other two languages, I bought Japanese I - 3rd Ed.: Learn to Speak and Understand Japanese with Pimsleur Language Programs (Comprehensive) and Conversational Spanish: Learn to Speak and Understand Spanish with Pimsleur Language Programs (Simon & Schuster's) (Spanish Edition), but i only needed the very basics for Dutch. With the Pimnsleur method, not only did it provide a good foundation for learning more complex sentences, but I have received compliments from native speakers on my accent, which was important to me.It may not seem like much, but if you at least make the effort to learn to say, "I'm sorry, I don't understand. Do you speak English?" you get treated much better. I've been traveling overseas my whole life, and an American who makes the effort to learn a few phrases makes a better impression than an American who expects everyone to speak English. If anything, I recommend the basic programs, in case you find yourself stranded overseas due to an unexpected emergency.
