A definition of "the classics of English literature" could be that set of works a familiarity with which is required of anyone who wishes to be truly educated in the subject. While there could be disagreement about exactly which works should be in this set, most would put Melville's often dark tale of obsession high in their lists.Yet another review of "Moby Disk" itself is therefore redundant - my comments are aimed at this audiobook production. The credits say it was "read by William Hootkins", but that is something like saying Hamlet was "read by John Gielgud".Hootkins is an actor with an incredible range of nuanced voicing, and he has applied his craft to creating unique interpretations of Melville's colorful characters. This is indeed a reading of a (somwhat abridged) edition of the original, not some kind of "audio play based on" the book. Nevertheless, Ahab, Queequeg, Starbuck, Stubb all come alive in an almost visual way. One quickly forgets that the same person is reading all of the parts. It is as if Melville's writing and Hootkins' voices were made for each other. Even some characters who appear only in one scene are given such a unique personality that we think we have spent hours with them - for example, in Father Mapple's sermon on Jonah, one can visualize the entire scene, the crusty preacher admonishing his flock of sailors with a sermon in their own slang.I can't really explain it - just buy it and listen. You'll hear what I mean.
