After having gone through 10 days of this book (in about 4 weeks' time), I feel that I have a few comments to make:Plus Points:1. It is a very well written course, and grammar is introduced and explained in a very structured and clear way.2. It is an ambitious course, and compared to many other beginners' courses I have seen, you learn A GREAT DEAL more, at a MUCH FASTER pace, from day 1. Even the conversations learned from the Day 1 can be used right away in real life situations.Minus Points:1. EXTREMELY POOR EDITORIAL WORK. There are a very large number of inconsistencies between the book and the audio recording. These are cases where both are correct, but the narrator on the CD says the same thing in a slightly different way from the script in the book. For a beginner learner, this cause a lot of confusion. You would have thought such inaccuracies, being very easy to rectify, would have been eliminated for a course which had its first edition more than 10 years ago. I have to say, this course is the most poorly edited course book I have ever seen. The editorial carelessness is shocking and tarnishes the Berlitz brand name.2. The audio recording is extremely fast. I take it this is to introduce normal speed Spanish speaking from day 1. Although this is good for your listening skills, I find it almost useless for practising speaking, because it is almost impossible to imitate the speaking from the CD.
I'm just learning Spanish as a beginner and I can't even believe all of the mistakes I have found in this book. This is not a good book for beginners because you will learn completely incorrect things. For example, accents on words missing, conjugated verbs written completely incorrectly, answer key with entire sections completely wrong. I love the style of this book and how it is formatted, but wow, whomever edited this book did an absolutely horrific job. Spanish editor, Vanessa Martínez Pérez, and señor commissioning editor, Kate Drynan, should be embarrassed to have this work published. I still learned a lot from it, but I would recommend finding something better. It is so obvious that absolutely no one even went through the book to read it or tried filling out the answers. Mistakes and problems everywhere. I felt like I was the editor working with a first draft.
