I'm a retired professional who decided about 4 years ago to resurrect her college French. I read books with my Sorbonne-degree holding teacher who is about my age. She chose this book for us to read and discuss. I read it over a four week period and I was fascinated. I asked her if the French was "good French" and she said yes. There are quite number of idioms I had never run into before, but which will be very useful. There is no bad language, although the author, Joël Dicker does have a lot of fun with various New York-based characters (the mother, the agent, the secretary and above-all, the publisher and the wanna-be ghost writers). In several respects the book is almost a classic coming-of-age story, the young author of an accidental publishing success experiences a two year period of writer's block, almost loses it, under pressure writes a book, makes serious mistakes, and then rewrites for a wonderful book that will definitely make his career. To a certain extent, I wonder how much of Joël Dicker is in the character of Marcus Goldman.In my opinion, the book is mischaracterized as a "thriller". There is some chasing around, but very little physical action compared to the usual thriller. Nola Kellergan, the key female character, has been dead for 35 years. The questions are: who killed her, and why? But something is missing there. The more important questions are: At the age of 15, who was she? What traumatic life changing experiences had she had? Who might she have become? Was her death intentional, or the result of a series of happenstances? And above all, what was her relationship with her mother?There are also some important questions about her relationship to Harry Quebert, the key male character. We meet him at the age of almost 70.
