André Dussolier brings this great text to shimmering life. I listened to all eight discs on a long distance drive, playing each disc two or three times to let Proust's complex French syntax amid the occasional distractions of high-speed traffic on I-80. By the end I found I was thinking about quite "trivial" things in Proust's French and seeing them with his intense eyes (all the senses, really).Even by the end of this collection (covering the first half of the first volume) you can see how Proust is writing about the creation of art from life, about the supreme value of what we often take as ordinary and unworthy of art. It's easy to make fun of Proust, but the work, when you hear enough of it, has all the genius of its reputation. Dussolier reads it with subtlety and understated passion.[It goes without saying: this is in French. You will need advanced French to enjoy it. Actually, the vocabulary is easier than Flaubert's, but the syntax is formidable. Dussolier has perfect mastery of rhythm and intonation.]
