To the reviewer who called the book "Stupid" and said "The words are like, Ball... Oops. Why is the ball an oops? How did it go through the window? This book is just lacking in everything. Don't waste your money." and others like him/her...The number of words is not the issue. The children reading or being read to must make the connections between the few words and the actions / emotions they see on the page. It is about finding meaning by connecting their own experiences / understanding with that of the character. It is not about having the big ideas of each book fed to you through text.Try it out yourself sometime...you'd probably be less likely to make the review you did and maybe be able to answer the questions you posed in the process.Shannon's books are just fine...and rhyming isn't a prerequisite for a children's book =)

There is something special about David books. Maybe it is the simplicity of the words but my 1 year old son is absolutely in love with them. He has four of them and always reaches for the David books over any other book that he has. He has tons of them too that have been passed down from siblings. They basically have just a couple of words on each page and you read them in about 20 seconds but the pictures add life to the short story. My son will sit and flip through these books on his own throughout the day. He gets a kick out of these.

My son is nuts for David. I have no idea why. But hey, he's two. This is ultra simplistic -- pretty much one word per page. I end up doing a lot of ad-libbing and talking about the other things in the illustrations. And even though I think the David character is oddly drawn, the scenes really are cute. In one illustration, David dumps mac 'n cheese onto the family dog, a Westie, from his high chair. That cracks us up, as my son has dropped mac 'n cheese on our Westie more times than I can count. If you're looking for a book that will help you build up your child's vocabulary, this probably isn't the one. But if your child has already been bitten by the "David" bug, he or she will love it.

The No David books and Diaper David books all have very few words on the pages, but this is why they are so great! This gives you a great opportunity to talk with your child about what the boy is doing and interact with your child about what you are reading and seeing. My 14 month old daughter loves all of these books, especially when I get silly and point out things in the picture that the boy did. I am also a school teacher. I have taught kindergarten and 1st grade and David Shannon's, "No David" series are always their favorite books to read. Especially when you interact with the children and not only read the word on the page.

There are some kids books that really "stick" for kids. They get emotionally involved in the art and they love the story. Oops! is that book for my daughter. In her two years of life, we've probably read this book hundreds of times. Now she "reads" the ten words herself. (Ten words is just right for her to "read", and it was just, just right to read to her when she was a newborn.) Love this book!

Got this for my 18 month old for Christmas and she really likes this book. It's simple, but with words and pictures she can relate to and recognize. And we can talk about what is happening in the pictures.

With just a word per page, I didn't think my two and three year olds would appreciate the books, but I bought two David board books anyway after a friend recommended them. I'm surprised how much the kids LOVE the books. I read them over and over, and the kids love each calamity on each page. When the macaroni spills on the dog, they insist it's just like our dog. They name all the kinds of food David has on his face when he eats. It's an engaging book despite it's simplicity and prompts good conversations.

My 17 month old boy LOVES these books - belly laughing, pointing, smiling, babbling as we read together. The negative reviews seem to be from an adult's perspective only and not based on their baby's reaction to the books. Yes the drawings are a bit odd, but not to my toddler. And if those weird drawings get him excited about reading, then so be it! And yes, the books are extremely simple but these are meant for VERY young children. He likes to turn the page within 3 seconds, so 2 words total is perfect at this age. In my opinion, it's as thought the author was able to climb inside the mind of a baby somehow and create the perfect book.(And P.S. David and his cute little antics are a pretty darn good representation of a typical baby/toddler boy. :-) )
