I have read all of the Hitch and Cole novels, those by Robert Parker and those written by Robert Knott. I believe the series is going a little flat. The old feeling a reader developed that these were two dangerous, ruthless men is slipping away. There is still action, but there is a lot more talk these days, and not all of it is that interesting. This book in particular is more of a mystery and a courtroom drama than a tale of two gunfighters on the side of the angels. And now that there is no sexual/romantic tension between Cole and Allie, she adds almost nothing to the story. One last pet peeve: the constant notation that somebody "nodded some". He "nodded" will get the point across.
First thing you should know if you're thinking of reading this book, if you didn't already see it on the cover, it's part of a series. Like Parker's other series, it isnt necessary to read them in order, but that is my habit. Second thing you should know is that the first book in the series was Appaloosa, which the movie of the same name is based on. It was one of the most accurate adaptions of a book that I have seen, and one of my favorite westerns. If you haven't seen the movie, I would rent it so you can save the price of the book if you dont like it. Third thing- the Cole and Hitch series is more of a detective series set in the old west than anything else. There is the flavor of the old west about them, but they are still detective novels. When I read them, I do see similarities to the Spencer novels for sure. This is a murder mystery/courtroom thriller as much as anything else, and a good one. Although I figured it out around halfway, it wasnt obvious- I think I lucked onto the solution and it was borne out through the rest of the book. Although personally I recommend reading the series in order, if this is your first one, you're going to like it.
Nicely written, but no real action. Love the characters but missed the excitement. first one in the series I didn't love
It's really too bad that the Estate of Robert B. Parker has allowed this publishing company such a free had that the Publisher doesn't even need to bother editing the work. The second time I came across the term, "Ms.," (used in a sentence spoken by a character) knew this book was doomed! After all, Gloria Steinem wasn't born until the latter half of the 20th Century. Such a darn shame that the pursuit of profits vastly outweighs the ability to turn out a quality product. I had to rate it with 2 stars because I didn't want to hurt the feelings of the writer.
Robert B. Parker's "Blackjack" is very cool. Both Everett and Virgil are my two favorite characters. Add in Allie and you have tremendous interaction. The story introduces a new character, Boston Bill Black who is the bad guy but but our two heroes end up helping him. Great western and I hope there are more from Robert Knott. In this story, Everett ends up falling in love, or almost, and is quickly dumped. Love the characters and the story.
I read some of the other reviews before I purchased this as I knew that it wasn't written by Robert B Parker. The earlier reviews had a problem with the chattiness between Virgil and Everett. While it wasn't 100% true to their earlier characters it wasn't that annoying. While this was not a level 5 it is a solid 4. I will probably continue to read this story line as I like the characters.
I like Spencer and Jesse Stone. Parker and his imitators do a better than average job, when they stay in New England. The western series is one that would have been better off not being written. The dialogue is worse than Mickey Spillane, the plot non-existent.and the imitator has failed badly in any attempt to make this series worth reading
Love the characters, the era of time, the situations that arise throughout the story, the surprising ending totally unexpected. Check it out
