This text was used for my Federal Taxation II course so we only used the later chapters. The text is intimidating and the way it is structured by paragraph number is confusing at first. But once you get used to it makes researching the right section simple. The examples given are very instructive and the text references the tax code often enough that if you need to find the actual IRS line you can use the text material to narrow an online search.
I am in my second year of taking courses involving taxation and I just love this book. I bought a used copy for $20 and can use it to study for 5 different courses I am enrolled in. It covers everything: tax procedure, tax research, income taxes, partnerships, gift and estate taxes . . . . I wish I had bought it last year when I was in basic tax. I use it to supplement my casebooks and the IRC itself. For this purpose, and given I have at least a minimum foundation in the material, the book is concise, informative, and well organized. Given other reviews, it may or may not be what someone needs. For my purposes, I would give it 6 stars if I could.
I bought the kindle edition of this book, and it has been a complete waste of money. I needed this book for the end of chapter questions that are required homework for my tax class. Unfortunately, the questions are all jumbled up. Half of problem 52 will be in the middle of question 48. All the numbers that appear in lists, whether in the chapters or the questions are also out of order which makes this book worthless. All in all this shows a complete lack of quality control from the publisher.
DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE BERSION!!!!!!!!!!!! The Kindle version has horrible formating and it most parts with numbers are illegible. There are many figures and tables in this book but NONE are shown in the Kindle version. Waste of money and much of the information is unusable since it cannot be read. Wish I never purchased. Could not stress enough how unusable the Kindle version is.....
Tax documentation obviously has a limited shelf life as tax laws are constantly changing. CCH is the authority on tax and tax law and this book gives you a really good overview of common tax situations and how they are handled. The one key element missing in this book would be more in-depth information on how research tax issues. I've often said that taxes are like fingerprints, each situation is unique to the person and must be researched accordingly. If you're looking for a book to get you started in understanding common tax practices then I'd recommend it.
all of the tables which are absolutely necessary to understanding the content do not format right and are unreadable. they just show up as scrolling numbers and are completely undecipherable. If you need this book for class do not buy the ebook. I did and now i am out $200 and still need to buy the hard copy in order to do my homeworks for class
Purchased this book for an advanced tax class I took last semester. The book was filled with information but a hard read, very dense. I would recommend a different book if teachers are thinking about using this for a class. A lot of information in each chapter and for someone that is learning the tax code, it is extremely hard to comprehend.
It's very difficult to find what you're looking for in this book. I really had a difficult time finding something unless I had a very good idea of where it was based upon the lecture in the classroom.
