I've passed both the Auditing and BEC sections on the FIRST try using ONLY Wiley CPA Exam Review. Since I'm shopping for "Wiley Financial Accounting and Reporting" I thought I would provide a review since I'm already here. The Wiley material is more than sufficient for passing the CPA exam, plus you will learn a lot. Many of the sample multiple choice questions are very similar to the real exam questions. The simulations are very similar too. If you master the Wiley material, you will pass the exam. There is a lot of material but if you are truly looking to become a CPA the scope and depth shouldn't bother you. Before purchasing CPA exam review material I did alot of research in to what I should purchase. I have no doubt that choosing Wiley CPA Exam Review was the right choice.
Graduated w/Accounting degree 10 years ago and decided to finally go for the CPA. Had never done Gov't Accounting, and barely remembered any of the Pension Accounting, Not-for-Profit Accounting, Leases, and Foreign Currency stuff. Bought this FAR book (and nothing else - no review courses, no testlets, etc), studied a couple hours a day for 2.5 months -- read the entire thing and did all the questions twice -- and took the test. Just got my online advisory score today -- a 92!I think they could have done a bit better on checking for typos, the cheap paper tears and bleeds-through, and it will drive you nuts how they simply cut questions and samples off at the bottom of a page and continue it at the top of the next page. But I can't argue with the results, especially when I look at how much money I could have spent on other options. On to BEC ...
Okay so if I can get through this book, I imagine it will be virtually impossible for me to fail the FAR section of the CPA. I wish review books didn't have to be so large but I guess this is why CPA's get paid the big books. There is no question in my mind that this books covers everything you need to know.
The substance is great. I love the outline form of the study guides and how the book refers the readers to multiple choice questions every few pages to test their understanding. All textbooks should be like this. The only thing I don't like are the occasional typos. They have caused me to question whether answers on the answer key are correct, but so far I've always found that I was wrong for some subtle reason (the questions are very tricky, which makes it kind of fun and challenging). The only typos that are really significant are the references to the accounting pronouncements in the back of the book. They must be leftover from a previous edition because none of them match up so I've had to flip through over 100 pages of pronouncements every time I need to find one.
This book contains everything you need to know to pass the exam and the price is amazing. However, it reads like a dictionary and is very intimidating. In my opinion this book is best used in combination with other materials. This book is excellent to reference for when you don't understand a concept but reading the chapters start to finish is sure to overwhelm you.
The book is very nice in so many areas. The notes and the multiple choice questions and the explanations to the answers are very very good. However there is one thing that I don't like about the book; it has to do with the research part of the simulation. The authors do not tell you how you to look for the right answer. In all the research questions, they just put the answers there, in a way they are telling the student to memorize the answers which does not help on the exam. I think the right procedure should have been how to tell the student to look for the key word(s) in the problem because it is the key word(s) that leads you to the answer. Any time I see this, it makes me very angry because it does not help the student in any way. I think it is a very big minus to the book and the authors should rectify this before the next edition is released
I bought the kinddle version since I have one, and it is really hard to navigate through the pages. Unlike a novel, you need to go back and forth with this book to do exercises and look for your references and it is a pain to move between pages. I later got a paper version and worked a lot better.
There is so much information here. This will probably take me a full year to go through but its also deep.I think they do a good job, in my opinion. Granted this is a lot of information, if you are going for your CPA, this would be the book to get.Highly recommended.
