This is a different twist on the holocaust. Very interest-holding. I found this book difficult to put down. I loved it.
"The Coin" is not just another Holocaust novel. Yes, it has Nazis, but Gustav Junker is an ordinary German who was recruited into the army and finds himself assigned to drive one of the portable gas vans. He begins to question his role in the military machine and whether he can, in good conscience, continue to be part of it. This is a perspective which has not been explored often, and pulls the reader in. In some ways, it resembles "The Book Thief", in that it paints with broad strokes but is also rich with metaphor. I would recommend it for high school readers, in that it requires a bit of background knowledge about the history of the time to fully appreciate the details. I found myself wanting to know more about the Sonderwagens and the men who drove them. I love historical fiction for that reason. I also found myself thinking about the book days after I finished it, wondering what I would do if placed in similar situations. I recommend this book as well worth your time!
"The Coin" was a very captivating book of WWII and the Holocaust. Gustav Junker is a driver of the Sonder-wagen/mobile killing unit in Poland. Gustav meets Herta and Yakov along the way. "The Coin" is very detailed with metaphors hidden along the way. Many secrets of the Holocaust are told. Gustav goes against what he is told to do, and does what he feels are his morals. The book is well worth the time, especially if you enjoy the World War II era.
This book was great. It talked about one of the many secrets of the Holocaust, and the main one was Sonderwagens. A Sonderwagen was one of the many things that Germans used to kill the Jews. The Characters were interesting and there were great twists. Gustav Junker always did what he was told, but he soon started to think about whether it was right to do what he was doing. He went around Germany trying to help a woman named Herta escape, but along the way, an unknown passenger arrives and so does a true Nazi named Brewmeister. The book is great and I have recommended it to my family members.
