There were new friends in the house, but they were very different from many that had arrived before them. These friends were staying in the cellar. Mama looked closely at Anett and said to her, “Time to take breakfast down to them.” There was a long candle burning on the cellar floor and fear temporarily washed over her as she approached the new friends. They were in “the secret room where [they] hid Danish Jews from the Nazis.” Carl’s mother held him close, putting her arm across her shoulder. Anett offered them her name and explained that “Mama made you breakfast.” She had many questions of her own at her family breakfast table that morning. The new friends would only be staying a couple of nights. Papa told them that “On the third night a boat will take them to Sweden.” Mama said they would need more bread to off to the bakery Anett went. The baker told her to “Stay safe” for there was danger in the streets. The soldiers began to knock on doors looking for people. Mama then “tapped three times on the cellar door to warn our friends to be quiet.” It would be difficult for their new friends to make their way to the harbor with no moon in the night sky. Anett would continue to help, but things grew worrisome when the soldiers became more persistent. How would they be able to get Carl and his mother to the harbor when danger was all around them? This is a powerful story of Anett and her very unusual plan to save her friends. Of course this is a work of fiction, but is based on the true story of Gilleleje, Denmark, a town whose citizens collectively helped save people on one moonless night. The tale has just the right amount of tension as young Anett helps her parents and the other adults in the town take care of and watch for Carl as his mother.
