My daughter is 4 1/2 and is beginning to read. The DK books are wonderful and she loves them. The pictures are very good (all DK books are excellently illustrated) and the short stories hold her interest. This series is great in that the reading levels are clearly marked on the book cover, so she knows what to look for when at the library or bookstore.I also appreciate DK because of their quality binding. Unlike so many other children books, DK uses heavy glossy paper-stock.
They're simple. They're informative. They're cheap. If your child is too young to read, they're perfectly good read-aloud books. What more can you ask for when stocking your kid's library? As you might expect, this book takes us through a day in a firefighter's life. The sentences are short and direct. This makes them easy to read, and it also makes the book more exciting. The fire in the book (you knew there had to be one) is not especially scary, and is dealt with quickly. More detail is given to the more usual routine - cleaning, taking a class on a tour to talk about fire safety, that sort of thing.I very much recommend this book for small children.
My LO really enjoys the DK readers and we have several, including A Trip to the Zoo, which we all love to read together. This one, however, gets one star because it is so riddled with negative gender stereotypes I just can't bring myself to keep it.So back it goes and here is a one-star review just to alert parents who care about this issue. But, let me repeat, besides this one and the dull and random 'Colorful Days', DKs are a hit in our house.
This book I believe to be geared towards kids under 3 years of age. My son is 3 1/2 and it was too simple and short for him. A very nice book though ESPECIALLY since it has a small analog clock on the upper hand corner of the page that shows what time is it...with a corresponding digital print as well. This book is actually perfect for kids that are intrigued about the time of day and time in general.
This is a good book for several reasons. It shows some of the other things that firefighters do besides battling blazes. The diversity of the characters is good. The main guy is African-American and one of his buddies looks Hispanic and his name is Luiz. I wish they had included a woman in the story in some way but overall I liked the way they presented the story.
My son is a firefighter/paramedic, so I sent this book to my 2 yr old grandson to identify with the things his father does. My son says he wants to read that book EVERY night before bed. He asks for it by name and knows all the equipment, tools, etc. that a firefighter uses.
This book shows the firefighter's day from morning to night. Simple story meant for 2-6 year olds, and great for the fire engine loving boy who is learning what it means to be a strong and brave firefighter.
My 3 yr. old grandson enjoyed this book as I read it to him. The pictures were colorful and realistic. It was interesting to him to learn more about firefighters. I would definitely recommend this book.
