Those who have no knowledge of classical Latin pronunciation will have a hard time learning Latin using the Cambridge Latin Course Unit 1 book all by itself. The book doesn't really cover pronunciation. So issues such as the differences between long and short vowels or how to handle the letters "v" or "c" never arise. Luckily, the series includes, though at extra cost, compact discs and an excellent website complete with audio to help anyone with speaking Latin.For the compact disc, Cambridge pulled out all the stops. This is no dry academic reading by stodgy professors. It features real emoting voice actors and even sound effects to bring the dialogues completely to life. The actors also speak slowly and clearly, except for some of the more rough or villainous types who typically have thicker and heavier accents. As such, these readings become real performances.Of course everything has a downside, including this great CD. Possibly due to time or budget constraints, the CD does not include every dialogue in the text. In general, each Stage has one or two dialogues, which the exception of Stages 11 and 12. All of the dialogues for these final two stages appear, except the introductory dialogue for stage 12. Since these stages encompass the lessons of the entire book, including nearly everything from them almost makes up for the absence of many other earlier dialogues.The course's website can bridge much of this gap. For an annual fee, the website includes an audio dictionary that includes all of the words for each unit. It also includes many other interactive tools, which makes the small investment a worthy one. It looks like Cambridge has plans to expand the website, as Unit Two Stage 13 now has interactive click-able dialogues for all but one of its dialogues.
