Full Disclosure: I am not a reader of K M Weiland's series of fiction books. But these two books are not fiction and I AM - not only a fan of Weiland's writing series - I have e-copies tucked into my IPad, which functions more as a massive library than anything else, plus two sets of hardcopies with many pages browned, dogeared and marked with tabs for quick reference, even some waterspots because I read in the tub for greatest relaxation and retention. Because these two books are superb writing resources, possibly the most accessible on the market in terms of readability and sheer "usefulness."There's no wasted space, run on self-praise, just pure hardcore knowledge of what I think of as "the discipline of writing explained clearly." Because it seems to me many writers get lost in their words, worlds, and stories, so attatched to what they wrote when it comes to the nitty-gritty to send it to an agent or publisher, their brain enters a specific "protective mode" that filters or masks the true craft of storytelling. Exiting will always be a necessary and painful process in novel writing. These two books, well studied will arm the writer with the weapons necessary to be tough with yourself at the most critical early junctures: planning, outlining, then moving to writing, editing... its valuable before you set fingers to type... Outline First. Its amazing how the story unfolds from this process, especially if your characters seem to run with it while you're typing or dictating to keep up! It can you save you months of work and soothe the writing beast. Of course, you'd expect the beasts to be on our side from a Fantasy writer! Trust her, she knows.
It doesn't get any better or clearer than this. Ms. Weiland guides you through the process with a helping hand. A newbie writer should enjoy this, but I think experienced writers might even get more out of it. After writing for long enough, it's very refreshing to get into outlining since it saves time and helps build a better story. You get all the advice on writing the outline and then- the best part for me- the work book. Now you can apply all you've learned by answering the questions and completing the exercises. It's a marvelous experience and I know I am miles ahead of where I would have been on my current project. This set is pure gold.
I purchased the set for my son who wanted to start writing. He was thrilled and amazed to learn about story structure and the importance of outlining. The format of the workbook facilitates progressive learning and the author's website is a treasure trove of advice and experience for writers of all ages.
My copies sit pride of place on my writing desk. They practically glow now I have highlighted so many pieces of advice from them. I dip into them throughout the writing process and I have found marked improvement using the structuring and outlining methods. If I am ever stuck I look to them for motivation.
I bought these two books separately when they first came out. I'm a "pantser", one who writes novels without preparing the plot ahead of time. I still write this way, but Weiland's book taught me a lot of stuff about wanting to know in advance the direction the story takes, Now I am a semi-plotter. This means that before I start I know a lot more about the protagonist, where he fits in my historical novel, where he's going and how he will get there. And I know ahead of time how it will end.I also bought the workbook to see if I could become a tighter plotter; but for me tight plotting takes the joy and the surprises out of writing the novel. HOWEVER, once the first draft is down in hard copy, I use all the elements of plotting to shape the novel into a tighter story.Four stars? For me, the workbook is not useful after the fact. For the new writer searching for a system, I don't think there's anything better than this pair of how-to books.The Officer's Code (The Schellendorf Series Book 1)
I have often thought that outlining had to be Roman numerals and completely formal. Outlining would stifle all creativity and SOOO not for me. However, after reading this book I can't wait to start outlining my new novel. KM Wieland makes outlining a no brainer, this book is for any author, aspiring or veteran.
What an excellent resource! I've been reading Weiland's great website for about a year now, but I've held off on purchasing her books on writing in hopes that a bundle would be made. Lo and behold, here it is!If you're new to writing, or even have quite a bit of experience, I promise you there's something for you to learn about outlining and structuring a successful story in this box set. I've read way too many books on writing, outlining and plotting, and I think I've learned more from this set than from the dozens of others that I've read.In level-headed, easy-to-read voice, Weiland lays out everything you'll need to know and offers answers to many questions I've gotten stuck on in outlining. Highly recommend this!
I found this book to be incredibly informative and easy to follow. I have a read a ton (give or take a few hundred pounds) of books on writing over the years but was really drawn to this one’s focus on the mysterious process of outlining. K.M. Weiland has a real knack for keeping everything fresh and fun. This is a book that is beneficial to writers of every experience level. Whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years this could save you a lot of unnecessary headaches down the road. So make this the last review you read and just purchase the book already. Your readers will thank you!
