does what it says, this book is intensive. not for beginners but if you can pronounce 'ich' and the umlauts correctly then this is highy recommended. for beginners colloquial german would be a better choice. also of note is the good paper quality and the physical size of the book - roughly A4 size.i hope i was helpful.please note : the answer key and audio transcript are not in the book but can be downloaded freely from routledge.
NOT FOR SELF-STUDYIn the introduction to this otherwise EXCELLENT text, the reader is advised: "It is NOT a SELF-STUDY course, but requires teacher support." I must agree. I assume that the objective of the publisher was to provide a basic framework around which a teacher could design his/her own course. However, I believe that anyone attempting to learn German on their own, without the support of a teacher, would find this text simply too challenging. While the dialogues and texts are well-constructed, there are no translations. Furthermore, the explanations and notes on grammar are, in my view, somewhat skeletal for a beginner. There are numerous self-study courses available that provide dialogues and texts that are every bit as challenging but that also provide more a thorough explanation of how the language works. Routledge Intensive German is, indeed, an excellent text. However, it is designed for a classroom setting.BOOK AND CDs SOLD SEPARATELYProspective buyers should be aware that the BOOK and the 2 CDs that accompany it are sold SEPARATELY. This is not all that clear on . The total package costs approximately 140 $US, which is fairly reasonable, given the quality (for classroom use).
The book is not worth the price! The book is billed as an intensive German course. It covers the usual material, but it does not really appear to do so in any greater depth than any other standard textbook. Perhaps the book is called "intensive" because the total number of chapters is only ten instead of the usual fifteen or twenty units in a standard textbook. In sum, the vocabulary covered is about 1200 words, nothing extraordinary either for an intensive text.My biggest criticism of the book is that it does not come with the audio CDs. The CDs are listed on the Routledge site for an additional whopping $100.00. That's twice the price of the paperback edition of the book itself! Unfortunately, many of the exercises in the textbook are keyed to the CDs. Thus, much of the textbook is useless without them. At $150.00 for the total package, this product -- to put it politely -- is OVERPRICED!Not wishing to end this review on a totally sour note, I observe that Routledge does provide a downloadable answer key on its website. The publisher has also included some additional exercises, tips for teachers, and a transcript of the audio CDs. This website would have been the perfect location for a set of downloadable mp3 files but, alas, Routledge has chosen not to include them here. Perhaps, the publisher will repent and include them in the near future.
