Vocabulearn originally consisted of French and English word/phrases. They were GREAT. A fantastic way to build up your vocabulary in a foreing language. First, a Native speaker would speak a word or phrase ...then the English equivalent would be spoken. A booklet was/is included with the translation in French and English. This is the way Vocabulearn originally published these language aids. The original versions were FANTASTIC!Now for the bad news. Someone with the company got the idea that putting a Mozart-like music track in the background would increase your comprehension and retention. True, studies have shown that being exposed to gentle Classical music DOES increase intellectual ability in most people. Here, though, the Mozart-like background is at a significant volume level and one has to fight to pay attention to what's being said because of this IRRITATING background noise.The music track is TOO LOUD to be a useful subtle adjunct to the program. It SUBTRACTS from one's comprehension and retention, I would say, for the majority of people. That CERTAINLY was the case for me, my wife and daughter.Listening to Mozart probably IS good... but maybe not necessarily at the same time while you're trying to do something else!GET THE ORIGINAL VERSION of these CDs, without the aggravating music background noise, even if you have to buy Cassettes. The original versions without the background drivel are wonderful. These are TOUGH to listen to.
