To use this this book you need to have access to the French in Action videos, and to the French in Action audio cassettes. Note that this entry is for the older edition ... you should consider getting the second edition instead. And you have to careful that your workbook is of the same edition as your audio cassettes. It would help if would clearly label each of these. That said, in any edition this is an excellent way to learn french, either as part of a course or by yourself.
This package instruction method (DVD & text, CDs and workbook) is one of the best self-study systems. Capretz picks out salient points and generally explains them well. The exercises that follow are contextualized, so answers to exercises must conform with that content. This is particularly helpful when comparing passe compose and the imparfait. I enjoy teaching French with these materials and my students enjoy learning with them--and we appreciate the answer key included. Yeah, the material is dated and there are a few exercises I'd rewrite, but the workbook really picks out key vocabulary, phrases, and constructions for focus.
you need the videos to go along with the book. I am surprised how much I picked up from just a couple times. It is going to take time and practice but it does work!
