When I read this sweet, gentle, utterly charming little book to my grandson, if he's really sleepy, I just read it straight through. But if he's not quite in sleep mode, we pause at each page to relate the words and illustrations to his own day. What did you eat today that was yum, yum, yum in your tummy? Whom did we wave bye bye to this morning? Can you help me count all your tired little toes? From the day it arrived, Little Sleepyhead has become a very happy, much appreciated addition to our bedtime routine.

Spare text and large, fluid illustrations come together in Little Sleepyhead by Elizabeth McPike and Patrice Barton (illustrator) to create a delightful bedtime story.McPike's rhyming tale flows as smoothly as any lullaby, describing a child's body parts, from "tired little toes" to "tired little everything" as a variety of "precious little sleepyheads" are prepared for bed. The text is presented in couplets printed in a different color on each spread.Barton's illustrations show a variety of babies, siblings, and caregivers in large format on a white background that will translate well for those viewing the book up-close or from a distance in a read-aloud setting. An excellent choice for bedtime-themed programs or one-on-one nighttime routines.*A more condensed version of this review appeared in an issue of School Library Journal from which it can be seen in various sites online*

I got this book for my daughter from our library and loved it so much. I wrote the name down and bought it for our permanent collection. The illustrations are so beautiful and the simple story is very soothing for bedtime. My daughter is 2 and wants me to read it to her all the time. One of my favorite all time toddler books

I bought this wonderful book to read to my two year old grand daughter. She was entranced with the picture of the baby on the cover cuddling a stuffed puppy. (Her favorite show on TV is Paw Patrol so she was hooked as soon as she noticed the little doggie in the baby's arms.) She seemed delighted to imitate the illustrations, first by wiggling her toes as I counted them, and then by blowing imaginary bubbles, an activity we had done earlier in the day. In sum, this is a great book for little ones. It will give much delight to you and your baby.

This is as adorable a picture book as I have seen in many years. The rhyming text reminds the darling babies of all the things they’ve done on a busy, tiring day, and so it’s now time to rest. It’s easy to read and delightful to hear. I think this lovely tale, and its precious illustrations, could become a classic bedtime story!

The images are tender and the words are few, but its a great little addition for the bedtime routine. Also is multi-generational and multicultural which is a BIG plus for me. I already have Baby Love and Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site... however this book is a better length for bed time and there is a degree of reflection on the day which i like. If the child is not ready to go fast asleep you could ask the child to count toes, reflect on the day, sing to them a lullaby, etc on each page when appropriate. BTW, reviewing of the day has been shown to improve memory skills. The book only lost one star because the art work is a bit hard on my eyes - they keep trying to focus because the images are a tad blurry by design.
