I've only just discovered Keillor's wit in the past few weeks, but already the words, "It's been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon," make me listen intently. This is a great collection that I'm only half-way through b/c I want to savor each story. "Gladys and the Raccoon" is my favorite so far, followed closely by "The Risk Takers." There's no dull moment, thus far, and the stories hold their allure even in repetition.
Somehow I had skipped over this collection from the 90s, but I'm so happy to have finally found it. I am a long-time fan of the News from Lake Wobegan, but I've been somewhat disappointed in more recent releases. A few of the tracks have appeared in other collections, but most of them were totally new to me. My early favorite is Gladys Hits a Raccoon -- I may never stop at a convenience store without thinking of it, and snoring may forever remind me of a dying racoon, but that's how the good ones are -- they just stick with you.
Is there anything better than listening to Garrison Keillor's stories. Love his simplicity made so funny. Many of his characters stay in my head and even come up in conversation. Brilliant story teller.
Garrison Keillor's stories from Lake Wobegon are always humorous and can be poignant at times without losing the gentle nature of the story.Mr.Keillor pokes fun at his characters but never in a condescending or disrespectful manner. These stories are gems told by a master storytellerwith a voice that sounds like home made apple pie and ice cream. You will find yourself smiling, laughing out loud, nodding in knowing agreement and, like apple pie and ice cream, you'll want more.
I started listening to Keillor because my ex was a big fan of his when he listened to NPR on Sundays years ago. I picked this collection up, and through various moves, I lost it years ago. Glad I found this CD again. He really is a genius and a keen observer of human nature under very humorous circumstances.
