1st grade American History: Early pilgrims of America. Warning this review contains spoilers. I think that this book does a good job explaining who the pilgrims were at a level most first graders will be able to understand. I think that it is worth mentioning that this book has 7 pictures. I wish that the pictures that are actual photographs had a caption telling what they are; example recreated Mayflower boat, rebuilt Plymouth settlement, etc. (I don’t know what these pictures are Mayflower and Plymouth are just guesses on my part.) This book starts out by giving a definition of the word pilgrim. This book next describes who they were, a group of English settlers. Then smoothly makes the transition to why they left Europe. I think that their explanation of the pilgrims leaving because they did not like being told what to believe or how to live is good. I think many first graders can relate to not liking being told what to do. Now that we know why they left England we are introduced to the word “separatists” I like its definition and explanation. This book does a good job at making sure the target audience understands what is being presented. Now we get into the fun part the dates that they left, and the boats that they attempted to make the long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in. One of the boats the Speedwell did not make friends with the ocean and had to return to port. This left only the Mayflower as their only boat to make the journey to the new world. They were finally successful when they set sail September 1620. The journey across the Atlantic was long and difficult. Some of the difficulties are described. Finally they landed November 9 1620. That means that they spent almost a full 2 months on the ocean.
