It’s lots of fun to surf the Internet, but “you need to know how to learn to stay safe.” In order to learn to stay safe, you’ll need to learn just what the Internet is and what it’s made up of. Many things are connected to the Internet, which can be accessed by “using the World Wide Web.” If you check out the address of any site that you go on you’ll see that there is the abbreviation www in the address. Of course you can easily guess that it stands for World Wide Web. Now that’s an easy one, but what about some of the other abbreviations you see in those addresses?Once you get connected to the web with a browser, you’ll see abbreviations that will show you what country the site is from. More importantly, you’ll find “abbreviations [that] tell the kind of group a site belongs to.” You’ll see things like .com, .edu, .org, and .gov. Each of these sites are created for different purposes from making money to educating people. Learning the different types of sites will help you to understand whether or not someone is trying to sell you something or help you “decide if a group that owns an .org website is telling you facts or opinions.” The more you learn, the better your online choices will be!If you have an e-mail address, you’ve certainly received some mail you didn’t ask for. These kind of messages are “junk mail [that] is mail you didn’t ask for and do not want.” Of course you probably know that this is call spam, but if you don’t, you’ll learn to tell the difference between spam and e-mails that aren’t. Have you ever received an email from what you thought was “someone famous?” If so, it’s probably an example of spam. You’ll receive a few hints as to how to deal with the unwanted spam and why you shouldn’t open it.
