Most of us have computers at home and if we've got a bit of research to do and the office or libraries are closed, we have to set aside our games of solitaire or email and get to work. The World Wide Web is right in our homes, but how much do we think about it or even know about it? First take a look at your telephone and phone jack. You have a phone number that connects you to your family and friends, but also you have another number that can connect you to people around the world. This number is different in that it doesn't connect two phones, but rather allows us to connect and communicate with other computers. This number is "called an Internet Protocol (IP) address" and is given to you by an "Internet Service Provider."If you look up at the top of the page on your computer screen, you will notice that it has "Uniform Resource Locator (URL)." You can see an example of one in this book and a photograph of the one they give. You will also learn about a modem, dial-up connections and faster ways to connect like "digital subscriber line (DSL)" connections. You will also learn about cable Internet connections, cable modems, wireless (wi-fi) connections and radio waves. If you have a computer at home, how do you connect with the World Wide Web?Most kids learn all about how to use a computer at an early age, but don't necessarily know about how information actually is transported across the Internet. It was simple, yet direct and to the point and will be easy to understand by the young student. The print is large and words used in the glossary are in bold print throughout the text. The photographs are clear, bright and appropriate to the adjoining text. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary and additional recommended book and web site resources. This is a nice introductory book for the young student to learn about the basics of the World Wide Web.
