I need to pace myself. I shouldn't review Dick Francis books back to back. But, man, I can't help it. I'm on this Dick Francis kick right now, re-reading his stuff whenever I can lay my mitts on 'em. HIGH STAKES reaffirms my giddy fanjoying over this writer. HIGH STAKES is of the older persuasion; it stretches back to the ancient, misty, barbaric age of 1975.If Dick Francis has been in your peripherals even for just a mo, you're surely aware that he spins these yarns about murder and horseracing. And because of this chosen blend, maybe others had opted to steer clear - because how many of us is really a horseracing fan? And yet there's this. If you haven't ever picked up a Francis thriller, then you have missed out on something pretty great. The man has got impeccable chops as a crime writer. And he makes horseracing so interesting.Not all his protagonists are jockeys-cum-sleuths. Many, in fact, hold down jobs that bear the most scant attachment to the sport of kings. Francis' heroes have been charter pilots (RAT RACE) and actors (SMOKESCREEN) and diplomats (COMEBACK) and ruin renovators (DECIDER) whose worlds happened to collide with the British horseracing society (and with foul play). Take Steven Scott, thriving inventor of toys. Steven harbors an expensive hobby. He owns racehorses that he bets on regularly, not that he knows horses so intimately. When he suspects his dynamic horse trainer, Jody Leeds, of having cheated him out of thousands, he publicly sacks him. But Steven doesn't factor in the extent of Jody's vitriol and viciousness. Worse, Steven is viewed as the idle rich lording it over the little guy who's sweated for him and produced a crop of winners for him.
