A special solo adventure for Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor, in the second of three stories dealing with the Doctor's latest battle with arch enemy the Master. Somewhere off the South Coast of England, there's a lonely island. On that island stands a solitary castle, long since abandoned - haunted, they say. But the truth is, that castle houses something far worse than mere ghosts. The castle is what lies at the end of a trail followed by the Doctor in search of several missing scientists - all of them connected to the top secret Dominus Institute and its elusive CEO, Sir Andrew Gobernar...But the Doctor will soon discover that he's the one being haunted, by a ghost from his past...or perhaps, his future. Big Finish's main range of Doctor Who stories began in 1999, and has featured television Doctors Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann across its 212 tales. Writer Justin Richards has worked in a variety of roles connected with Doctor Who, including a number of novels for the BBC. He's also the writer and creator of The Invisible Detective series of books. Star Colin Baker recorded this just as the 2015 I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here candidates were announced - a series close to his heart after a popular appearance in 2012. Alex Macqueen first appeared as the Master in Big Finish's Doctor Who spin-off UNIT: Dominion, going on to confront the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) in the hugely successful Doctor Who - Dark Eyes series. CAST: Colin Baker (The Doctor), Alex Macqueen (The Master), John Standing (Professor Threadstone), Kate Kennedy (Heather Threadstone), Neil Edmond (Boatman/Guard), Catriona Knox (Landlady), Elliot Levey (Gobernar).

I was eager to hear Colin Baker's Doctor matched up against Alex Macqueen's Master. The combination is a delicious idea and they do deliver some good moments. However, the story doesn't quite live up to my expectations, and I think the writing is the problem. The plot is okay. While Kate Kennedy's Heather Threadstone is a nice attempt to break the companion mold, she doesn't do a whole lot to make her stand out. Everything is just serviceable. Justin Richards doesn't really capture the full potentional of Macqueen's Master, and as Richards' tends to do, he overplays the Sixth Doctor's egotism for comic effect.Still, there are some enteraining moments, particularly in the first couple episodes and some hints as to what's to come in "The Two Masters." So overall, it's fair but it could have been far better.

Just finished listening to "Doctor Who #212 - Vampire Of The Mind" released by Big Finish Productions. The second story in Big Finish's new Master trilogy finds the Sixth Doctor visiting an old friend;and learning from his daughter, Dr. Heather Threadstone, that her father has been missing for several weeks now after dashing off to California to check on the welfare of a friend who nobody has heard from from awhile.Working together with Heather, who is a brilliant scientist in her own right and who can also match him wit-per-wit, the Sixth Doctor discovers the trail leads of an island off the South Coast of England which is giving him an eerie sense of dejavu for a good reason - it used to be the prison that housed the Master once before, but had been abandoned by UNIT. A new incarnation of the Master is seeking to trap the Doctor in order to steal his memories of temporal mechanics.SPOILER ALERT - Colin Baker strongly voices his belief that Kate Kennedy did such an excellent job with Heather Threadstone, that the character should return and become a regular companion of the Sixth Doctor.I echo that belief.Highly Recommended!Five Stars! .
