Every book that Catherine Coulter writes is pure magic. My love of her books goes back more than 15 years and I would never miss one. Her books featuring hunky Dillon Savich and feisty Lacey Sherlock, a husband and wife team who are both FBI Special Agents, are always exciting, with loads of drama and thrills and plots that never leave the reader wanting. These two characters are two of the most capable and likeable characters in any book in the thriller and suspense genre available in the market today. This book, Coulter's latest, Nemesis, has got to be her best to date, hands down, no contest. While waiting in line to clear the security check point at JFK airport in New York City Sherlock confronts a terrorist who is ready to toss a hand grenade into the crowd. From that instant she is working terrorist plots that spanning the globe from Boston to New York, to Washington, DC and to the United Kingdom. Sherlock becomes as big and important a target for the terrorists as the cathedral bombings they have planned in NY and the UK.While Sherlock has her hands full avoiding bullets and bombs up in the Northeast, Dillon is busy down in Virginia investigating supernatural killings that are connected to weird phenomena and Wicca and they are now trying to murder him, too. Thank goodness he is a mental giant himself and can fight in any realm. The two plots intertwine and twist and turn and meander in unexpected directions with so much plotting and fast action and snappy dialogue that it keeps you riveted to your seat. You won't be able to help yourself by rushing to the end and then you will want to start reading it all over again. This is a GREAT book.

There's no need for me to tell you what the story is about, if you're like me you read the intro provided by the author before deiciding to purchase/read a book. I have all of the FBI series; some have been better than others. I was really disappointed with Nemesis. Sherlock and terrorists I can handle...Savich and the occult, dreams you can call your co-worker into...no way.(Yes, I do know this is fiction.) I would have reduced the number of pages, told the readers at the beginning that Savich was at home with two broken legs, then just told Sherlock's story with the terrorists. I like a book that you want to reread as soon as you get to the last page. Nemesis is not that book.

In my reviews of the last two FBI books, I pointed out how boring and unengaging they had become. This one is a notch up, but still not as charming and complex as the first dozen of the series. Big problem one: her best work has involved including a victim in the development of the storyline and the life of the characters. Still missing here, though plenty of opportunity exists. Two: readers have reacted positively to Dillon's psychic abilities, but it's used rather crudely with weak effect here. Again, lack of sympathetic character involvement on the victim side. Annoyingly, and I don't think I'm revealing too much here, the book opens with a virtual copy of a previous book opening, using a different character and venue, but so close, I could have written it myself. There are two parallel storylines, but neither is particularly suspenseful. Still, there is some more mystery surrounding different plots than there was in the last two, but we're still just not getting Coulter's best work here. Finally, and I may just speak for myself here, so grain of salt: I'm sick of her jabs at liberals and promulgation of conservative jibjab. Not sure which Coulter is writing these bits, but it adds nothing to the narrative, and reduces my interest in the story. Sigh.

For some reason, the author decided one "nemesis" wasn't enough, so she gave us two operations, dividing Savich and Sherlock. The result was cluttered and messy and very unnecessary. While Sherlock's target (multiple terrorist attacks) was fascinating, it could have used even more development and would easily have stood alone as the focus of this book. Savich, on the other hand, was stuck investigating a series of murders that leaned toward the occult, somehow involving Wiccans. The entire story was poorly developed, poorly explained, and then wrapped up in a neat little bow at the end. "We all lied and let people die because she's a powerful witch" just didn't cut it for me but apparently the author felt that would allow her to avoid explaining so many inconsistencies. Prior FBI novels by this author were so much better as we're her collaborations with J.T. Ellison. Read those instead.

Catherine Coulter brought our favorite FBI agents,Sherlock and Savich to the fore again with mystery, flair and edge of seat plots. She will have guessing as to who is the ring leader with Sherlock and at the same time have Savich involved in another plot that will have you bouncing from one to the other. At the same time she introduces a new FBI agent with Sherlock and brings back Cal to help there are many instances that what you would think is going to happen or what you will think that the plot is but Catherine throws in a loop that takes you away from second guessing her goal.I have always been a fan of Catherine Coulter and have bought and collected all her books from regency, historical, contemporary and most of all her FBI series and her writing with J.T. Ellison on the Brit in the FBI series. As in all her books she gives you a plot that will have you glued till you finish and will wonder why and how she could of ended it as she did when you thought that she was going totally in a different and predictable ending.Even though Sherlock and Savich are in this book and we(fans) love them you will want to reread if not start reading the FBI series again and will not be able to stop waiting like me for the next FBI, Brit in the FBI series or anything that Catherine Coulter's writes she is truly a gifted author to read and to collect her books so that you can read them over and over...
