I am writing this review as neither a 9/11 conspiracy nutjob nor as a family member of someone from Cantor Fitzgerald. This book is about the efforts of Cantor Fitzgerald and its Relief Fund to help the families from their company who lost someone on 9/11. It was written by the director of the Relief Fund, Edie Lutnick, who is also the sister of Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick, and who lost her brother Gary in the World Trade Center that day. The areas covered in this book include efforts to secure funds for the Cantor families, the horrors of being informed that remains of loved ones had been identified, the movement of WTC wreckage and consequently human remains to Fresh Kills landfill, and the controversy over the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.I bought this book because for some reason I finally felt ready to read about 9/11 twelve years after the fact. It was one of five that I purchased after 9/11/13. I wanted to know more about the Cantor Fitzgerald employees who died tragically in these attacks, and how the company itself coped. After reading the book, I have mixed feelings about it.What's good about the book? First, it details the generous promises made by Mr. Lutnick to the families of his employees, and it appears that he kept them all. This is certainly admirable. Next, Ms. Lutnick provided what can only bluntly be termed as an "insider's" view of what it was like to be the family member of someone who perished in the Towers that day, including everything from the emotional agony to the bureaucracy that ensued, including the arguments over the Memorial. She clearly, unquestionably worked herself to the bone to try to aid the Cantor families at the expense of her own health and despite her own tragic loss.
