While I usually review CDs and DVDs as well as entertainment related books here on , in my major occupation, I am a CPA with over 40 years of work in the Nonprofit field. I am also Treasurer of a Nonprofit so I feel qualified to provide an accurate review of this book.It is another in the fine line of legal books - written in plain English - by Nolo Press. I've been reading their books for more than 30 years. This particular volume is the 5th Edition. The original was published in 2005 and this is the March 2013 version. It's not clear what parts have been updated or revised. I reviewed the 2011 version of the book and not much has changed my rating. My headline title then was "Good book covers main concerns and serves its purpose. Note that author is attorney but does not practice NFP law." And that still appliesThe author - an female attorney who writes a blog on self-employment for women and has written other small-business guides - actually does public relations for nonprofits rather than provide legal advice (this from the blurb on the book jacket and her blog) . She is a good writer (hey, that's her main business) and spends the first few chapters asking QUESTIONS? Many of the Chapter or sub-chapters here are things like: "Do you want to be tax-exempt?" (not all NPs are), "What is the Mission?" (The MOST important question to be answered before deciding if you want to form one.), and "What do you want to name the NP?". She does point out that - though the umbrella tax exemption (for Tax-exempt organizations) comes from the IRS, the State in which the NP is incorporated is almost as important. And, if you plan to start a TAX-EXEMPT (501(c)(3) organization, you will not find the detailed steps to apply for the exemption here.
