Round Is a Tortilla is a picture book that helps kids learn shapes as well as a few words in Spanish. Written by Roseanne Greenfield Thong, the story follows two Latino children as they dance, cook, play games, read and enjoy other activities in the world around them. They see shapes in normal, everyday things like the round moon, a square fountain, rectangular flags, triangle-shaped slices of watermelon, and oval pebbles.John Parra's illustrations include many other objects in the featured shapes, some of which are Latino in origin. These include sombreros, tortillas, ventanas, paletas, metates, guacamole, and huevos. A glossary in the back helps out both kids and any parents who are not familiar with these terms. Each page has lots of shapes to discover in things all around us. Round Is a Tortilla is sure to help kids look for the shapes in everyday objects in their own world. The publisher provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed reading this book, not only is it fun to read because it has cute rhymes, but the Spanish is well incorporated and natural sounding (it so irks me to find awfully "translated" books). But this book is mostly in English, with a few Spanish words sprinkled here and there to make it culturally warming, especially for Chican@s/Latin@s. The illustrations are also beautiful. It's great to see some brown faces and culturally significant items/words in kid's books.

Round is a Tortilla is a book that represents the life of two Latino children as they explore the shapes around them. The setting of the story is typical of somewhere in Mexico. They find shapes in everyday places and things such as crunchy chips for triangles, ventanas or windows for rectangles, and huevos or eggs for ovals. The story contains beautiful illustrations that portray many more shapes that a young person would encounter by looking at the world around him. Since there are quite a few words featured in the text that are in Spanish the author included a glossary at the back of the book to help parents and children understand the meanings. I like this book because it helps children to learn their shapes by introducing them to objects they see every day and categorizing them by shape. I also appreciate the illustrations in the story and the way he includes many shapes in the pictures. You could spend a lot of time just looking at the pictures in the story and finding all of the shapes. Even though the text includes words in Spanish, it is still easy enough to understand or figure out. This book was published only recently and I think that teachers and parents will truly enjoy using it to help children to understand shapes while adding a bit of Mexican multicultural flare. I would use this in my classroom to help students who were struggling with understanding shapes. It would be great to use during an anticipatory set for the unit on geometry. I think that the younger grades would really enjoy this book as well and it could be used as an introduction to the shapes. After reading the story I would have my students fill in a graphic organizer for each shape while finding objects that they see in everyday life to fit into each category. As an extension, students can go home and look for more objects and bring some in to be included in a classroom shape museum.

My son really loves this book. He really likes the pictures and has pretty much memorized this book. He just turned two. I like that he can make real world connections to it (the food items, he is familiar with). Fun to read!

This book, along with Green is a Chili Pepper by the same author, has been useful to teach and reinforce shapes and colors in my preschool class. I like that I can read the book in English, but it does include some Spanish vocabulary for food, household, and celebratory items that are familiar to the students in my class.

This is a great book for children learning their shapes! It's also give children a view on the Latino culture! This is definitely a book I would use in my classroom for a multicultural view and learning shapes!
