Disclaimer: this is my personal preference because I love all things aquatic. This Sherlock Holmes book just is not as pretty or interesting (even to my 10 month old) as the Moby Dick BabyLit Primer. I really wanted to love this one as much, but the colors don't "pop" and the descriptive words seem a bit off with regards to the picture. It's still a unique picture book that we look at frequently, but just not a favorite like Moby Dick.
I'm a fan of Sherlock Holmes (the originals - Rathbone, Brett, and the new Cumberbatch) and who doesn't know the story of the Hounds of the Baskervilles? I know it's a sound book so the pages don't really tell a story so much as use sound to set the mood, but my copy STARTS with the hounds howling and ENDS with the doorbell ringing at 221B. It makes much more sense to read the book backwards, starting with the doorbell ringing, then the footsteps, leaves, creaking gates, thunder rumbling, and finally hounds howling. Maybe it would be too scary for babies if it led up to the howling?
Sherlock Holmes is the first in the BabyLit series to address the concept of sounds to your children. Some sounds your children will encounter include hounds howling, wheels clattering, and leaves rustling. Each of these sounds is appropriately illustrated with concepts from The Hound of Baskervilles. It is definitely a favorite of my son's as I try to really get into mimicking the sounds as they appear on the page. It is beautifully illustrated too, and would be my top choice if you are new to BabyLit.
I usually do the sounds with much gusto, drawing out the creeeeaaaaaaakiinggg stair noises and screeeeech of the gate. It always gets a grin from my seven-month-old! He loves looking at the pictures and chewing on the corners of the book. The pages are thick enough that he's getting the hang of turning them on his own!
The author of these books has managed to get the entire story into just a few pages of colors, sounds or numbers. What a wonderful way to share literature with small children and allow them to grow with it :)
Very cute children's book, especially for parents who love Sherlock Holmes and want to instill a love of our favorite detective in our own children! It's a very simple story and the illustrations are clever and fun to look at. However, be warned that this book has absolutely nothing to do with any Sherlock story. You'd be reaching to call it a mystery. But, it's a fun gift for any Sherlock lover to add to their child's library
Purchased this book via kindle first before purchasing the board books. I think that the physical books would be much more fun than the digital copy. I like that the series focuses on different sounds, colors, numbers etc.will more than likely buy others in the series.
Fair warning - your children aren't going to start deducing solutions to the world's woes. This is a simple book with one word per page. Just teaching fun sounds with creative illustration. My 18 month old son is obsessed with this book, so that's 5 stars from him. The book is sturdy and fun, so that's 5 stars from me!
