I was searching for something comprehensive yet approachable that covers the whole nonprofit world, soup-to-sorbet, so grabbed the newly released "Nonprofit Management 101: A Complete and Practical Guide For Nonprofit Leaders and Professionals". It's an amazingly good read, and assembles the best thinking from some of the best minds in the field. At 600 pages, but with big font and lots of text boxes and other attention grabbers, the book covers complex subjects with ease and clarity:* Fundraising with individuals, foundations and companies* Legal, financial, and human resource management* Board and volunteer recruitment and engagement* Social media and the effective use of technology* Nonprofit career paths* Lobbying and advocacyThere is something useful in here for even the most advanced non-profit'ers, I would think. I plan to recommend it to anyone who could use such a thing!
I've just become a board member of a very small, all volunteer, humane society that I have been active in for seven years. Wanting to do a good job as a board member I went looking for books that might help me learn what is expected of boards and how we might grow our organization. This book is probably a good one for much larger organizations and it did contain some very helpful information but it's geared toward groups that are much bigger, have physical space and paid staff.
There are lots of books in the non-profit field, but Darian Rodriguez Heyman has succeeded in showcasing expertise from leaders on the ground with practical advice. The depth of the topics are impressive: from Managing Organizations and People to Nonprofit Law and Finance, and fundraising, you should feel informed and empowered as a non profit leader after reading the book.As an Excecutive Director of a non profit, I have already applied some of the advices in the book, this is a must read!
I'm the head of marketing at a nonprofit, and was very much looking forward to reading Heyman-Rodriguez's compilation. After reading a few terrific chapters, I made the mistake of mentioning this book to my fundraising department, which immediately stole the book, and won't give it back.I'll be buying more. A must-have for nonprofit orgs, with intel from top leaders from across the nonprofit world.
As someone who has worked as a nonprofit fundraiser for 10+ years I have participated in umpteen seminars, conferences, brownbag lunches, webinars, etc, etc, to round out my professional development in the nonprofit sector. This comprehensive book covers all the issues critical to creating a thriving and well-governed organization. The editor Darian Rodriguez Heyman and the contributors are all noted leaders in the field, who have honed their knowledge by working "in the trenches" so to speak. The chapters are concise, relevant and full of practical "how to" suggestions.Whether you've been in the nonprofit field for years or are jumping in for the first time this book provides a great road map for getting where you need to go!
I found this book to be very helpful in creating a successful nonprofit in a time of constraints. Although the author provides lots of his own valuable insights, I particularly found it very useful to have lots of different direction and opinions from some of the leading experts with diverse backgrounds. This has become a "go to" guidebook for me. This book will remain relevant for a long time. Glad to have discovered it.
This book draws from the experience of 50 thought leaders and change makers, including writing from Paul Hawken, Lynne Twist, Beth Kanter, Ami Dar, and Kay Sprinkel Grace. The list of contributors reads like a who's who of the non-profit world. Management of a non-profit organization can mean the difference between effective advocacy and social change programs, and failure. Therefore, it's tantamount for those running an organization or playing a critical role within an organization (fundraising, marketing, board management) to make good use of limited funds and other resources at their disposal. I have full confidence that the movement is furthered as a result of this book.Read it and more effectively get on with the mission!
Great resource. I am the coordinator at a nonprofit peace and justice organization and this is a great resource. I review it often and read experts little by little to learn and it ideas. It is like an operations manual for a small non-profit.
