My stepdaughter reads on about a fourth grade level, and, as a teacher, I'm always looking for high-interest non-fiction for her. This book - and the many others in the same series - really fit the bill. The pictures are fascinating for absolutely anybody - exciting but not too gory. Each page covers a single topic, so there are lots of natural breaks for discussion and comprehension-checks. The reading level is just challenging enough to build a mid-elementary school child's vocabulary and reading skills, but it's not overwhelming. The material is scientifically accurate but not insanely technical. The writing style is engaging and approachable without being condescending or childish. This is serious non-fiction, just written for a fourth-grade reading level. It can sometimes be hard to find good non-fiction for the middle elementary grades, but Mr. Simon has really hit the mark. Buy the whole series!
Received on time. I purchased this book for my grandson's summer reading. He reads a book a day. He loves sharks and these books are perfect for an 11YR old to read. The pictures are amazing and the information is just right for this age group. I highly recommend the Smithsonian books! I am very happy with this purchase.
The book 'Sharks' by Seymour Simon was an informative and entertaining read. Many shark books have a tendency to retell commonly known information. This book offered many tid bits of infomation that kept my interest such as the gestation of most shark eggs being six to fifteen months. One line in the back of the book was questionable. It says, "The jaws of a great white shark are filled with fifty two-and-one-half-inch pointed teeth- the largest teeth of any shark." I was confused about what it was referring... the amount of teeth or the size of the teeth. I have to believe that it was the amount of teeth, as a fifty two-and-one-half-inch tooth is one gigantic tooth! Overall~ good book.
Very informational, vivid pictures. Perfect for young (or old) shark enthusiasts. Bought for an eight year old shark lover, he is very happy with it. Would recommend.
The book is a wonderful source of information for students who are researching sharks and preparing a report. Used this book in a 3rd grade classroom.
This book was for my son, and he loves it! The pictures are vibrant and he is able to interpret them given the reading level.
