the year is 1954, and the advent of television is slowly but surely neutralizing radio drama...at least in America. to this day, American fans of The Jack Benny Program and The Shadow continue to lament that radio was rendered obsolete by tv, but it turns out that never occurred to the U.K. radio storytelling continues to thrive that side of the Atlantic even today.in the early '50s, BBC-Radio commissioned what would prove the very finest radio adaptation the Great Consulting Detective would ever receive. of course in all fairness, it has only one serious competitor for the title in the radio series Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce headlined adjacent to the Universal B-movie series in which they played the same roles. that one is probably best remembered for it's bizarre but charming device in which the series announcer visits Dr. Watson to hear a story personally. this is odd because, unlike the contemporary setting of the movies, the series returned Sherlock to his proper Victorian setting. since the series aired in the early '40s, Watson, who doesn't exactly come off as decrepit, would've been at least 90.the BBC series dispenses with such gimmickry and presents the stories in a straightforward fashion. it's bound to feel a bit dated, particularly in this age of Benedict Cumberbatch and/or Jonny Lee Miller, but it remains one of the very finest depictions of the Canonical Sherlock in any medium ever.no small asset would be the killer casting of John Gielgud as Sherlock and Ralph Richardson as Dr. Watson. it might be easy to assume that those distinguished names - both distinguished Shakespearean players who'd already been knighted - would be setting the bar a bit high, and that maybe they were brought on chiefly for marquis value, but you can lay any such suspicions to rest.
