This is not the unabridged version and is not clearly stated as so in many of the advertizements so beaware.

This audio book is perfect! they don't cut all of the extra's out of the book like the movies! The book is still more detailed however for those looking to hear a great story while on a car trip with the kids this is perfect. Some of the narrative is humorous to hear with funny voice acting it keeps the kids entertained and interested. Those going on a short trip will enjoy the layout format of this audio book 9 cd's 1 Hour each perfect for a There and back chapter to the supermarket! simply put this is a purchase you wont regret!

I've sent this "The Lord of the Rings: Trilogy" back twice now because both time what I received was a full cast dramatization, which typically means that it's abridged. I listened to quite a few audio books by now, all unabridged, and I don't think one of them was under ten hours. This trilogy is 10.5 hours for all three books. So unless they have changed the advertisement, and you want a full unabridged reading of The Lord of the Rings, this particular product is NOT unabridged, it is very much abridged.

I guess the fault was mine in choosing this product. I didn't notice that it was a dramatization. I thought I was purchasing the complete Lord of the Rings trilogy read word for word. I think the product may be OK for those wishing a dramatized version of the trilogy, but I must warn that much of the content of the book is lost through this dramatization.

This review is regarding the theatrical narration, not the content. To be honest, I could not even finish the first CD. The actors were absolutely horrible. I listen to a lot of dramatized books and this is by far the worst I have ever heard. The actors were whiny and annoying. Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite stories, it is a shame that such a great book was subjected to such horrible (verbal) acting.Do yourself a huge favor and purchase this dramatized story from another producer. Even listening to one person reading the story would be better than this particular attempt at "bringing the story to life".

The BBC did a wonderful job adapting Tolkien's classic trilogy into 13 episodes. The voice work was well done and highly evocative, and it made the 14 hours of flight time during which I listened to the dramatization very enjoyable. I particularly liked the depictions of Samwise, Perigrine and Merriweather.Be aware this is an ABRIDGED version of the trilogy, but all the important portions are touched upon. I believe this product to be worth its price. Also, it would make a great gift for any Lord of the Rings aficionado.I give this dramatization 4 stars only because I loathed the depiction of the Nazgul, particularly the Nazgul King. He spoke like a foppish Sherriff of Nottingham, not the servant of the dark lord Sauron whose very name set men to terror-stricken flight. Fortunately the Lord of the Nazgul doesn't speak that often, and when he does the incongruency between who he's supposed to be and how he sounds may strike you as comical. It rather reminds me of the incongruity betweem former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson and his high-pitched squeaky voice.

Great series! Although I love the series, I hate that is a dramatization. I find it takes away from the story itself. When you read a book, you do not have all the background music, and such. However, I love having books on CD for my car. I used to only have one book on CD, and it got old fast. Nice to have other books to switch back and forth.

This is probably one of those products that is better than we realize. It just simply didn't capture the imagination of my children or my husband. We listened to the Hobbit read by someone else and completely loved it. We wanted to listen to the other books by J.R.R. Tolkien. It is hard to separate the reading from the story. While we enjoyed this reading, it didn't charm us. We enjoyed the story and listened for hours while driving home on a long trip. We have agreed as a family though that maybe another reading would be better.
