My son is half-Chinese, and my husband and I are trying to help him be interested in mandarin. He loves the books by this author. It's written in Chinese characters and English. There is pinyin translation in the back (which is great as I don't read Chinese). There is even a pronunciation guide so you know how to use the correct tone.
Great book with Traditional Mandarin on one side and the English on the other. Few words per page so your little one can see the correlation between the two languages. My 6 year old who is learning from her Nai Nai thinks it's really neat and looks forward to reading it in both languages.
Such a cute book! The characters are traditional but as an intermediate Chinese speaker and reader who only learned simplified, I can still read it just fine. I like that it has English and Chinese characters displayed on the same page spread. I wish the pinyin wasn't only on the last page (it's like a pinyin translation for the whole book) and that it had pinyin for the title of the book, but otherwise, it's a great addition to our Chinese-English children's library!
Our family just didn't like this book!Pros:1. Bilingual in Chinese and English2. Simple storyCons:1. There's a big difference in level of difficulty between the English (easier) and the Chinese on some pages.2. The pictures just don't hold my toddlers' interests (either of them, which is odd because it's the type of book I would have thought they would like).I wish there were more bilingual options out there, especially ones that were age-appropriate in both languages and with more engaging pictures. This gets two stars because it helps to fill a gap, but my family really didn't like it...
This larger sized board book from Candlewick Press, A Nest in Springtime: A Mandarin Chinese-English bilingual book of numbers, is a great resource. The story is very simple, simply counting the eggs and goslings in the nest. But, every page has Chinese on the left and the English on the right so that children can easily see which characters are what. Even though the age on this is 1-4, it's a helpful tool for my 8 year old who just finished her second year of Chinese class. A good book for my use.I am trying to learn Mandarin so I am hoping that I can navigate children's books to do so.It repeats many of the words(some Chinese children's books just use it once).So it helps me learn to recognize them.I got several more of these books to facilitate this learning for me.
Also, I like that this board book is larger than many and I also like that there is a pronunciation guide at the end of the book.
