This book is a very good tool for children to learn the english and japaneese words for various items from family to pet's, toys and really all kinds of vocabulary. The pictures make it much more fun than a list of words to remember. This is such a good book I am getting another one for myself.
I was fortunate enough buy this book at a discount and compared to similar books that illustrate bilingual instruction, this Berlitz kids edition a good start - but I have seen better.Like so many other picture books that attempt to reinforce bilingual education, This Berlitz edition does good job of being a child-friendly picture book with twenty-seven illustrated scenes richly labeled in English and Japanese (in either Hiragana or Katakana - there is no Kanji in this book). The included audio CD is contains an abridged pronunciation guide to some of the scenes in the book.What really stood out was a distinct disorder to the book by having adverbs and adjectives mixed with nouns when in this other picture book the are alloted their own highly animated section. Some concepts are not illustrated at all - emotions, actions, and other "helpful words" are reduced to a word list in back of book which I thought is contrary to the way that the young child audience is still learning. I believe that for those trying reinforce bilingual education in young minds; it helps to illustrate the concept even if it is something as abstract as cardinal numbers, days of the week, and shapes. Finally, the book seems to favor loan words over native Japanese ones, e.g. the kitchen scene is named "kicchin" instead of "daidokoro".Nonetheless, it is not a bad book - but there is this overwhelming sense that if bought the other language editions of this book, I would be seeing the same illustrations and vocabulary. I have no doubt that the simple kana and CD will encourage reading skills and increase vocabulary of those learning Japanese but eager reader and fast learners will quickly out grow it. With that in mind, it is a great picture book for young children who are eager to learn Japanese.
I think this book is fun to learn Japanese. Kids like to look at the book. I wish the book had workbook too.
good for beginners or children. my son used to help with Japanese language lessons and found it helpful and fun.
