I was more than a little disappointed when I opened this book and realized I'd bought it without knowing that it was a compilation of three of Howard's previously released novellas, each of which I already own. I'll accept some mea culpa here, but it's annoying to have a book hyped as a "new" release when there's nothing "new" about it. Fortunately, these are three of my favorite works by Howard, and it's nice to have them together in a hardback edition. Howard is a master at adapting the novella format to contemporary romance. Her focus is almost exclusively on the characters and instantly building a sharp sexual tension between them. In each of these stories, the characters meet for the first time and circumstances allow them to skip most of the subtleties of courtship and move straight into steamy and intense relationships. "Lake of Dreams" is the first work I ever read by Howard, and ever since she's been one of my favorite authors. "Blue Moon" and "White Out" are even better. If you like contemporary romance - and you don't already own these stories - "Strangers in the Night" is an essential addition to your library.
It is just 3 reprints, The "Lake of Dreams", "Blue Moon" and oh I can't remember the last one. I e-mailed Simon books and was sent an e-mail that said this was a NEW book with NEW stories. LIE ... I'm not saying the stories are not good they are. I have just already read them. When are publishers going to wise up and aknowledge that the buying public DO know the difference between reprint and new print.!@!
As other reviewers have mentioned, the 3 stories that have been previously released. The stories are good, hence the 4-star rating. For loyal readers of Linda Howard, however, the book will come as a disapointment as they'll surely have read these stories before. While I don't mind reprints if I know that is what they are, the fact that this book was originally promoted as *new* was extremely misleading.
I am a big Linda Howard fan. However, I did not discover her until 2 1/2 years ago. I have almost every one of her books, but not many of her short stories. When I saw that this was coming out, I was very happy.I was not disappointed in these. All had Linda Howard's trademark Alpha men. The first story, Lake of Dreams, was different than I expected, but it hooked me and made me believe it could really happen.Blue Moon, the second story, featured a sexy Sheriff. He was trying to protect her from someone and when he meets her, he is hooked. Typical Linda Howard male, but what a sexy guy. This story is what I consider the more suspenseful of the three.White Out was my favorite of the three. What would you do if you opened your door during a snowstorm and in plops a stranger at your feet? One that you are attracted to immediately? Even though the hero spent the first part of the book unconsious, the sparks were there between them. I considered this the more sensual of the three stories. The story was HOT!I am very glad to have had the opportunity to pick up these short stories, despite having to pay hardcover prices. The joy of reading Linda Howard is priceless.
Nothing to get excited about.... It is just another reprint..."Strangers In The Night" includes "Lake of Dreams," "Blue Moon" and "White Out."
I had no problem with the fact that these stories were reprints. I had only read one of the stories previously and the price was not bad for a hardcover. I like Linda Howard and I would like to see something new from her, BUT I don't mind reading older books that are being reprinted. Everyone knows that this is a big trend with publishers now, so check the book out before you buy it. If you have read it and don't want to again then don't buy it, but if, like me, you haven't read ALL the old titles of your fav authors then be glad that you get the chance to now.
Linda Howard has a rare talent. She can write with sensitivity and humor, and her character and plot development are often great.I have read all her books once, and many of the older ones, many times. In writing this book Ms. Howard has betrayed her talent. This book is basically...- no character development, and no plot. All that happens in these stories is that two people meet, have [fun] , and "fall in love" in a 24 hour period. This from a woman who wrote" Duncan's Bride", "White Lies", and" Sarah's Child". Since I have followed Ms. Howard's writing career from the beginning, it seems to me as if she has really lost something since she has moved to the NEW YORK TIMES bestseller list. She has become just one more commercial, trashy writer. I sincerely wish she would return to her old, memorable writing style. It is painful to watch someone who can move me to tears, laughter, and caring waste her talent this way.
BUYER BEWARE, THIS BOOK IS A RE-PRINT.GOOD READING BUT OLD MATERIAL.
