As I believe others said, this is not a typical tourist guide book. It is, however, a seemingly good reference piece on Omani culture, traditions and practices. Anyone visiting Oman and wanting not to breach etiquette or insult Omanis can benefit from reading it. It's a quick read, as well.
I enjoyed this book very much and learned so many interesting facts about Oman. It's probably one of the only Arab countries where I'd feel completely safe as a Westerner. Here's an interesting fact - "It is technically against the law to drive in Oman in a dirty car, and you could potentially be fined for doing so."
Great little source to have in your bag of tricks to keep you from being the loud, obnoxious American abroad. At best, it may just keep you out of trouble in a place where trouble can mean a long, possibly painful, probably scary, and definitely expensive error in judgment.
This book is an invaluable read prior to visiting Oman. The culture is so different from the USA. Purchased this book to make sure I knew the customs and culture and it was dead-on correct. Had a great visit there for 2 weeks.
It's got some good historical background, and the cultural representation is also okay, but it's too out of date. It was published six years ago, and there have been chances since.
