I might have given 3 stars, but my 5 year old LOVED it, so 4. The illustrations are beautiful, the ideas are creative, and the main character is lovely. The plot could have used a little development for my taste... but again, my kids didn't seem to notice. :)
Oh my heart. This book is everything. This book is about as perfect as a book could possibly be. This book isn't just about Sadie. This book is about us all. We are all Sadie. Some of us just have to look harder to find her within ourselves than others. But she is there.Gift this book to your daughters to show them they can do anything or be anyone they want to be. Gift this to your sons to show them it's OK to be "like a girl." Sadie is a role model to kids and adults alike. Let's not forget there's a Sadie in all of us.
Sadie likes to make boats of boxesand castles out of cushions. But more than anything she likes stories, because you can make them from nothing at all.###Sadie is a little girl with a big imagination. She can talk to birds, sail ships, and fly among the clouds. In her many lives, she’s been a mermaid, a boy raised by wolves, and a hero fit for the grandest fairy tales. Sadie loves stories, and this is hers.THIS IS SADIE is a lovely, playful ode to the power of imagination and the transformative potential of stories. Many of Sadie’s adventures are inspired by popular children’s books – ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THE JUNGLE BOOK, and every fairy tale ever – which makes this simple picture book a wonderful tool for cultivating a love of reading at a young age. Parents and teachers can use it as a jumping off point for discussing their own favorite kid’s books, or perhaps encouraging kids to find new favorites of their own as they grow. The sparse text, penned by Sara O’Leary, shines next to Julie Morstad’s charming illustrations, which are as beautiful as they are whimsical. It was the picture of Sadie, sporting a fox mask and staring out from a field of wildflowers, that first caught my attention. The rest of the artwork is drawn in a similar style and does not disappoint.** I received a free electronic copy of this book for review through NetGalley. **
Sara O'Leary hits it out of the park again! LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. Illustrations so charming. Both 5 and 2 yr old granddaughters enjoyed the story and illustrations, having fun trying to find the fox in each picture. 5 yr old used a cardboard box like Sadie to pretend she was in a ship.Absolutely beautiful book.
I loved the book, but my son wasn't interested. He thought the story was about a girl with a fox face (based on the cover) and was so disappointed he never asked me to read it again. I thought the book had a really good message about being yourself even if who you are is a bit strange.
This book is so sweet and fun about a girl with a huge imagination. She makes her room and everyday places into adventures. The illustrations are lovely. My children and I love to read this book together.I was thrilled when I heard about this book because my daughter is named Sadie. It does not disappoint.
I was first drawn to this book for the cover illustration. It sat in my cart for several months before I finally purchased it. I was pulled to finally purchase when I was looking through the saved items in my cart and realized the title shared my new baby's name. I ordered it without knowing whether the story would be worth it. I was pleasantly surprised to read a sweet book about a girl with a big imagination, something a lot of our young children's generation could use more of. My oldest daughter really enjoys this book, and so do I! Any book that can be entertaining and inspire my kids to do something (without a chord, plug, batteries, etc.) gets my vote. The illustrations on each page also didn't disappoint! I was also pleasantly surprised with a poster printed on the inside of the cover protector of the book. Your child can never have too many books, and this one definitely needs to be added to their collection.
Summary: This is Sadie, sailing in a boat made from a cardboard box. And this is Sadie, being a mermaid in the pool with her friends. And checking her back to make sure her wings are in place. And chatting with the birds at the top of a tree. The days aren’t long enough for Sadie to do and make and pretend all the things she thinks up. More than anything, Sadie likes stories, “because you can make them from nothing at all.”Pros: This brief and beautifully illustrated book is a celebration of a young child’s imagination.Cons: Sadie seems like an all-too-rare phenomenon: a child who can entertain herself without ever having to plug something in.
