We love the Old Lady Books. Each book in the series follows a predictable pattern. If you have read one of the old lady books you know she will be eating odd things to spit out a surprise at the end. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books continues the pattern of eating and spitting out something related to the theme at the end. In this story she swallows some books, a pen, a pencil case, a ruler, folder, chalk, and a bag... Until she hops on the school bus, says a cheer, and out pops a ______ (O, I can't tell you, that would spoil the ending for you - GET THE BOOK). The illustrations are well done and the rhyming text is always a hit with grades Pre-K to first grade. It is a great read for back to school. Do a search on Google for There Was An Old Lady Printables and you will find many activities you can use at home or in the classroom with this book and many other Old Lady Books.

Cute idea, but the forced rhythm actually make this annoying to read aloud. "I don't know why she swallowed the books, but she didn't get any looks." My kids, 4 and 6, kept asking what that meant.

.... before I read this one. I was very disappointed with it. The author didn't try to follow the original rhythm of the poem and has added extra syllables rather than find different words to use. The pictures are the only saving grace. And who decorates their pencil case with chalk?! Buy a different book. ANY book!!

the only positive thing i can say about this book is the nice job on graphics. the story is terrible...i actually hate this book. my daughter likes to read it, but i would rather just toss it. it doesn't even make any sense. its terrible.

I have almost all of the There was an old lady books by Lucille Colandro. I was looking forward to reading this one to my class. It is cute, but I definitely enjoyed the other books more. My students seemed to feel the same way after reading it on their own. I did use it for activities which they enjoyed, but some had said they liked her (Colandro's) other books more. Not really worth it....Colandro's other books were more entertaining to read, better flow

I have many in the series and most are great. This one does not have the flow that the others do. The rhymes are a bit off and it all seems too forced. Some of the phrasing does not make much sense.

My daughter has struggled to read and after many attempts to find a book that interested her we have found that the "There was an old Lady...." books have peaked her interest. She will sit down and read this book over and over.

Run a daycare and my children love these books. This one isn't as "catchy" as some of the others but still fun for all ages. The little ones love listening and looking at the pictures and the older ones love to read these books. Beginner readers especially enjoy these books because of the repeating sentences....they actually stay with it till the very last page!
