I tend to group Sherlock Holmes audio productions into three groups: (1) the full cast production with sound effects and original music (think the superlative Clive Merrison BBC recordings); (2) the Basil Rathbone / Tom Conway / Nigel Bruce (and others) radio productions, with their shorter duration and some amount of music and special effects; and (3) the single-reader sets, where one person narrates the entire story. This recording by the wonderful Edward Hardwicke is in the third group, and I must admit that when I first listened, I felt a little underwhelmed. But I must say that over time, this recording grew on me. Mr. Hardwicke uses a number of surprisingly effective voices and accents to replicate the different characters, and if there is no music or special effects, it only serves to focus the listener that much more on the wonderful Conan Doyle stories. And it is impossible not to feel a strong tug of warm emotions when listening to the actor who portrayed Dr. Watson in the Granada television series. All-in-all, I really enjoyed this set and have ordered more.
I love Sherlock Holmes anything, books, audio CDs, DVDs. I am and have been a devoted fan of Doyle's Sherlock, as well as P.D. James and Agatha Christie. Holmes is a classy character, brilliant, and I probably have read everything, and seen many of the videos.
Makes my half hour drive to and from work a lot less dull. Enjoy the thinkingprocess Holme goes through.
These are done very much in the traditional Holmes story mode. Nicely done. My only complaint is that the stories are quite short, so the discs did not fill up the drive we were making!
the book was ok but CD #2 was missing. I've had good luck with used books before but this time two albums were inadequate. I have Parkinson's disease and have difficulty typing.
