The trouble with getting wrapped up in a C.J. Box novel is that at some point you finish it. This was my 10th read in 15 months and I would have hung around for more.Off the Grid deftly employs the usual suspects: Joe Pickett et famille, Nate Romanowski and a recently–introduced governor who could only preside over the state of Wyoming. Consistent with the Pickett series, the characters have both evolved and aged; Joe is now 47 and Sheridan 22.If you're new to these novels, they are contemporary, imaginative stories in a western setting. The writing exhibits mastery of the craft and if there are any off–putting factual errors, I've yet to spot them. Box does a nice job of putting the reader in the venue without getting sidetracked from plot momentum. The dilemma facing our protagonists this time around is both more contemporary and farther reaching than usual, for which we may perhaps credit the author's avoidance of too much sense of déjà vu. This round, though thoroughly familiar, is happily fresh. Maybe it's the dose of duplicitous feds pulling strings in the background while Joe is busy finding new ways to terminate his truck. Or it could be that a slug or two of guy talk (think John Sandford's writing) keeps the reader smiling. What else can I tell you without blowing the plot? As the story unfolds, we witness the convergence of several threads. The body count is above average. Nate gets the offer of a chance to leave behind his Jack Reacher existence. Joe and Nate save the world. Enough? In case you're wondering, no you don't have to read every book in the series in sequence. Box fills in enough back story to justify the characters' actions, but without irritating the veteran Joe Pickett follower.
