This was the only book in this series of I Survived that my granddaughter didn't have. Lauren is an exceptional author who has done alot of research & makes you really feel that you are in the dangerous story she is telling about. When Isabelle has read one of her books... it makes her look for another book or on line to read more about whatever danger ( San Fransisco earthquake, shark attack, Gettysburg Civil War battle, Sinking of the Titanic, Nazi Invasion, Japanese Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, & 9/11 Attack. She weaves so much intrigue into all of her books in not very many pages. She writes most of these on a 2nd to 4th grade reading level. You'll love them. I always read them before I give them to Isabelle so we can talk together about the books.
I read this book to my third grade students. Every single day they begged me not to stop. Today, I had to finish the last four chapters in one sitting. They loved it.The books is very informative, and when I googled information about the last days of Pompeii, there were so many elments of truth, even though it is a work of fiction.Very well written. It is my second "I Survived" book. They want me to keep reading all of them. I just ordered a set for my classroom so they can read some on their own as well.
My fifth grade students love this series! This episode was a bit tough for them to connect with since it's set in the year 79, but the exposure is good for them to boost knowledge, and the lexile level is easy enough for most students to understand. I enjoy how Tarshis uses a young person's perspective of the disaster, and often uses flashbacks or flash-forwards. I'd recommend this series for readers ages 8 and up who enjoy historical fiction and adventure.
My son has read all of these books. Historical fiction in an exciting format. I like that he was interested in reading them without my suggesting something. No, they are not useful for teaching history accurately. But they have lead to some interesting conversations at our dinner table. In the future, he will have some basis for understanding and can explore further on his own.
Haven't read this yet, but there is not an I Survived book that my kids did not enjoy. They love every one of them and look forward to every new I survived book that comes out. I recommend the entire series. My kids started reading these in 1st grade (although may have been a little more difficult to follow at that age) and my 14 year old still reads every new one that comes out. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! They teach a bit of history, but make it interesting with a great storyline.
We have the entire series. This book is very good. My 12 and 14 year old read it in no time. I was surprised my 14 year old wanted to read such a short story but he really liked the details and learning from another persons perspective. Great deal!
It was great but no survivors were indicated after Vesuvius erupted and also there are cast of people I climbed Vesuvius ands move was still there so it means it is active also it is soon to erupt prop in a century or before maybe after
Great series for elementary school kids and older. My daughter has read all ten and rereads them frequently. She has found them very interesting and they are easy for her to follow along with and understand.
