In a little over a hundred pages, this book surveys Christian thinkers and movements from the earliest days of the Christian faith to the present. This is not a thorough, in-depth treatment of Christian thinking and interaction with unbelieving thought. Rather, it introduces the student to names and ideas. One can read this book as an introduction to Augustine, Athanasius, other church fathers, Luther, Calvin, and other Reformers. Or one can read this as a review or overview. It packs a good punch either way. This book would be very useful for upper level high school students or college freshmen. Many a Christian sitting in the pew could benefit from at least being made aware of the richness of the Christian tradition. Again, this book is an introduction. The 96 pages of text (covering two millennia!) are followed by a series of timelines listing key figures and movements, a glossary (from Alexandrian School to Vulgate), and a bibliography for the necessary further reading. The beginning of much knowledge is having an awareness of names. (In classical Christian education, it is called "the grammar, or basic facts, of a subject.") I often want my students to have at least heard of certain people, even if they have little or no in depth knowledge of that person. This book serves that purpose.I am excited that this book is simply the introductory volume in a series by Crossway that will have feature books in various academic fields. Upcoming volumes include books on the liberal arts, literature, political science, and philosophy.
If you are looking for a cursory survey of the main people and ideas that have influenced the Christian Intellectual Tradition, then this would be a good starting point. The Authors also provide supplemental reading for further study. A fine introduction to a series that I hope to delve further into. Note about the kindle version: there are some minor spelling errors, but none that severely detract from the content.
