Although I consider his books slightly overrated, Rick Riordan is, in my opinion, a fantastic writer for middle grade and teenage readers. However, when it comes to the spin-offs and guides of his bestselling series, I'm not so sure about their quality.In the style of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Ultimate Guide, The Kane Chronicles Survival Guide has a splendid cover: some very cool 3-D images that change when you look at them from a different angle as well as a magnetic clasp. The papers inside are of good quality. I'm pretty sure even the haters of The Kane Chronicles will admit that this book *looks* good.But you know that old phrase to not judge a book by its cover? Well that's true here, because that content inside this book is lackluster. Most of the information presented in this "Survival Guide" is just basic info, rehashed into this new book. There are also lots of pretty boring character and plot summaries, which, if you really wanted to, could find on Wikipedia or something of the like. Some brief retellings of Egyptian myths are included as well, plus a tiny bit of Egyptian history. Most of the guide, though, has nothing new to tell us about Carter or Sadie, or even the world of The Kane Chronicles.Even the art doesn't save the sub-par text. Antonio Javier Caparo, the series' illustrator, is just as great of an illustrator as Rick Riordan is of a writer, but there isn't much art by him in here, and most of the art is seen on the cover (remember, the images change, so there are 8 characters displayed on the cover).
