This is a Leveled reading book "S" so it's most appropriate for readers in late 4th or the beginning part of 5th grade. Although the description site suggest that it is appropriate for grades 3-7, I personally think a 3rd grader would have difficulty reading this book unless they are at an advanced reading level. It's a very interesting story line that is the 1st of what will be a 5-book series. The last book is to be published in March 2016. Each chapter is numbered with Egyptian numbering (neat touch). An Egyptian hieroglyphic alphabet is at the end of the book.Without providing any spoilers - the overall story involves the near death of the main character, Alex Sennefer. His mother (an Egyptian museum curator) uses an ancient Lost Spell that is part of the Egyptian Book of the Dead in the hope of saving her son. The use of this spell however has the unintended consequence of opening up a door to Egyptian past and all types of darkness and evil begins to surface not only locally, but world-wide. Additionally, Alex's mother is now missing and the search begins to not only find her but to also stop the destruction that is unfolding from the Lost Spell.Expect to read about mummies, scorpions, hyenas, curses, disappearances, rain that is thought to be blood, and lots of other intrigues at a pace that will captivate young readers without being "over their heads" or too spooky. The main characters are a 12-yr old boy and a girl so both genders are sure to enjoy this book series. This is a very good book and my young reading and I look forward to the announcement of the 2nd Book in April 2015. Hopefully the continuation of future books will be just as mysterious and well thought out.

After watching family-friendly action/adventure movies like Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, National Treasure, etc., it is really fun to find a fun new series of books that centers around adventure. This book is aimed at approx. 4th-6th graders per the Scholastic site, and it is around a 5th grade reading level book. I've been reading this book with my 2nd grader, who is not quite ready to read it on his own, but who enjoys the book as an adventurous family story. The story centers around Alex and his best friend Ren. Alex is terminally ill, his mother is an expert on Ancient Egypt, and she uses a spell from the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead to help Alex. Unknowingly, she also unleashes five Death Walkers when she uses the spell. She also disappears, and so do the Lost Spells, so Alex and Ren have to try to find his mom. While trying to find Alex's mom and save the world, the kids run into Mummies, scorpions, and so many more challenges.Kids will be able to read the book and then go online (with parental permission) to play the game online, build an Egyptian tomb, hide treasure, set traps, and challenge friends. Note - you will need a code from purchasing the book. My advanced copy of the book does not have the code, so while the kids and I explored what we could of the site (which looks very fun), we could't play the game.I especially love that this book will get boys and girls interested in Ancient Egypt. (Alex is a boy, and Ren is a girl, so both boys and girls will enjoy the book and enter the adventure)

Oh, this book was pure fun - even for an adult! When I read a book like this, I look at two things: Would I have liked this as a child and would I want my daughter to read this? Well, the answer to both is an emphatic yes! In fact, though my daughter is too young for this now, I'm keeping it on the bookshelf to take out when she's ready. The story is an adventure from start to finish. You have a couple of really great kids, a spooky ancient Egyptian mystery, and a race around New York. The book corresponds with an online game. If you have a child who isn't a reader, you might start with the game first and then introduce the book. The book code will open special online rewards.Parents note: the book is definitely a little spooky. You've got mummys, crazy powers, a kidnapping, and even a death. But there isn't anything graphic about it, the language is squeaky clean, and your kids will learn a little Egyptian history and mythology.

Alex and Ren are friends who both have parents who work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and so they are well versed in the ins and outs of the building and always ready for adventure. Alex is sickly though, not able to attend regular school, racked by pain and headaches that seem to be caused by the slightest exertion. No one knows what is wrong with him. There are several mysteries around Alex that his mother, Dr. Bauer and expert in Ancient Egypt, doesn’t talk about including his health and his father. But when she doesn’t talk about the new exhibit opening, he and his friend Ren know something is up. That was how they started investigating. It is an exciting and dangerous journey that makes for fun reading. As with all high interest books, I can see this one going a little younger than 4th grade, especially to children who are strong readers and interested in adventure stories.
