Mary Queen of Scots holds a place in my heart. History lessons at school in Scotland always told of the bad things that befell her at the hands of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth last of the Tudor Dynasty. My bookshelves now hold hefty tomes all containing screeds of information on where she was imprisoned (seems like every castle across Scotland and England) and biographies of her jailers, as well as details of every plot to rescue her. All interesting and useful but not the way to capture new or younger readers. This is the first book by Laurel A Rockefeller that I have read. I was intrigued as to how the author covered the subject in a short book. She approached this biography in a novel way; focussed on Mary from her youngest years travelling to France with her own four Marys (ladies in waiting of the same age) through her marriages and on to her seeking refuge from her cousin. The lists of castles, jailers, plots and intrigues were thankfully reduced to telling the reader that Mary was kept prisoner for 19 years. Excellent. A non scary looking biographical history book. Perfect for people who want to know about Mary without being immersed in all the boring bits.However...I like the boring bits and they are all there at the back. All of her research materials, the ereader being very fortunate to be able to just click and link to the information. I spent hours with it - now I know what happened to the other four Marys
I love the story of Mary Queen of the Scots. The child queen who lived most of her life as a prisoner. This version of her tale is very easy to read. It is geared more as a simplified version of her very confusing reign as Queen of Scotland. It would be perfect for introducing a student to that turbulent time in history. The student would have the complete history of her reign as Queen and could pursue a more in-depth recounting if they were intrigued by this version.
I found this to be a fascinating read, I would highly recommend this book to those who like to discover what's hidden behind the crowns and swords of historical women.
Loved it.
Terrible! Definitely not worth the money. Not much content and could have been written by a 5th grader.
